Gulder Ultimate Search Season 12 has kicked off, and our 18 brave contestants are already facing challenges as they make their way to the jungle.

Akolo Gulder Ultimate Search

Every season, Gulder Ultimate Search takes us on a journey through time to seek out a treasure that many say are mere tales of legends. This season, The Age of Craftsmanship, takes us back to a small town called Ijuka, which existed many centuries ago.

A mysterious craftsman named Akolo appeared in the town one day and settled down amongst the blacksmiths and woodcarvers. He soon began to teach the best among the people because his skills were superior to theirs. His name spread beyond the town, but what drew the attention of many was his special brew.

Akolo’s brew was nothing like any that existed in the town. He used ingredients which no one had ever seen before that he got from trading his great works with European merchants. The king soon heard of his fame and appointed Akolo to be a member of his advisory council.

Akolo Gulder Ultimate Search
Akolo, the craftsman, possessed a special brew which only he knew the ingredients.

Although Akolo formed a close bond with the king, he never revealed the recipe of his brew. That was a secret Akolo guarded jealously. As the fame of his brew grew, trading routes began to pass through Ijuka, and many sought to taste his brew. Ijuka became a prosperous town, and soon enemies began to gather.

They were jealous of Akolo’s wisdom and his close bond with the king and wanted the secret of his brew for themselves. They tried several times to kill to no avail. Fearing for his life, Akolo left the town for the mangrove forest with his secret brew recipe and all his knowledge, never to be seen again. Ijuka, a once prosperous town, suffered Akolo’s absence and was soon laid to waste by foreign invaders.

Now, the council of elders has chosen 18 brave warriors to go back in time to The Age of Craftsmanship to search for the iron chest containing Akolo’s secrets. These 18 warriors have endured several challenges to prove they are worthy of retrieving the iron chest of the wise craftsman Akolo.

Which of them would find the chest and open it to reveal the secret of the craftsman?

Find out as Gulder Ultimate Search airs every Saturday and Sunday at 8 pm on Africa Magic Showcase (DStv channel 151), Africa Magic Urban (DStv channel 153) and Africa Magic Family (DStv channel 154 & GOtv channel 2).

May the best warrior win!

On October 9, 2021, MTN subscribers in many parts of the country experienced a service outage on the network. For some hours, some subscribers were unable to complete transactions through the MTN network.

While the situation was resolved in about five hours, MTN has apologised and compensated customers for the inconvenience. In addition to extending time-bound subscriptions for customers who were affected by the outage, the telecom giant has gone further to refund every customer for the data and airtime they used between 12pm and 7pm on Saturday, 16th October 2021.

Here’s the transcript of the CEO’s message to all MTN customers:

Y’ello,

My name is Olutokun Toriola. I’m the CEO of MTN.

Last Saturday, we had an outage that left our customers without a connection for several hours. On behalf of the entire MTN team, I want to start with a heartfelt apology. We are truly sorry for the disruption this caused for so many in our MTN family.

We know that millions of people rely on us to stay connected to their loved ones, to manage their businesses, to coordinate their lives. We take that responsibility, and privilege, very seriously. That’s why we are putting new measures in place to make sure we never experience anything like last Saturday again.

Our technical teams have traced the cause of the problem to an error that shifted all our 4G customers onto the 3G band. This overloaded the 3G band, causing a domino effect that impacted the whole network. Our engineers were able to resolve the problem.

I know that recently other technology companies have suffered outages. I want to reassure you that last Saturday’s event is in no way connected to those. This wasn’t sabotage, it was a regrettable error.

While we work to strengthen our network to prevent further disruptions of any kind, we wanted to find a way to say sorry. Something more than extending the validity of all time-bound plans by 24 hours, which we did as soon as service was restored.

So, while we can’t give you back the time you lost last Saturday, we can give you back what you spent yesterday. Every customer on the MTN network has received a refund for the data and airtime that they used between 12 noon and7 pm yesterday. We hope it shows how much we value our customers. You truly are our most important focus.

We all have challenges, each and everyone of us – young or old, personally or professionally. What matters is how we respond. With you by our side, we will continue to improve and grow.

Thank you for all your support.

Thank you for walking with us over the last 20 years.

We look forward to the next 20 and more with you.

We move!

Mercy Eke has always loved the reputation of being a ‘hot girl’, so you can imagine that everything about her screams HOTNESS. This translates not just to her looks or social media account but also to her partnerships and content.

mercy eke

The BBNaija Season 4 winner has taken all of that fiery energy and placed it in the brand new season of her show, Mercy What Next. After letting fans into her chaotic relationship with Ike in the first season of the show and subsequently calling it quits, Lambo is back with more. And as always, she starts the first episode with explosive comments about her relationships, mistakes, future plans, business and more. Here are seven outrageous things she said during the premiere of her show:

1. The matter of her relationship with Ike: She called the relationship a disaster and blamed Ike’s age for the major reason why things didn’t work out between them. She also said 80% of their relationship drama was on him. In her words, “Before I jump into another relationship, I have to be very careful and to know if what I’m getting into is worth it because the last one was a disaster. I tried and he can say that. Even when everybody thought we were not dating or I didn’t love him. He knew that I loved him. He didn’t try. I don’t blame him, I think it’s his age”.

2. The low-down of everything happening in her life: In case you missed it, Mercy is more than just a pretty face – she’s a CEO. Her breakdown of everything happening in her life will have you wondering how she juggles it all. She shared, “The Mercy brand is taking over the world. I’m venturing into acting. Did I tell you guys that I’m also into oil and gas? I supply diesel to companies now. My Lambo Homes is doing amazingly good. M&M Luxury – I have my offline store launching soon. I’m doing a lot of things that I hardly have time for myself. I mean since last year guys, I haven’t even left the country because I’ve been working back to back. It’s not easy trying to move this brand to my permanent site.

3. Mercy revealed that her move to acting hasn’t been so smooth: She was dropped from a couple of movies. She said, “I’ve had a lot of scripts and I’m beginning to think that movies are something I should do more of. And I’ve had a lot of scripts that I did not really put effort and energy into. Some I was dropped and replaced, but that won’t stop me. So welcome me, all the actors and actresses in the building. I’m ready for that movie, I’m ready for that script. Just hit me up. I’m a bit expensive, but you know what you’re getting.”

4. Mercy has so many clothes and shoes now, her wardrobe can’t even contain them: She shared that she’s had to redo her entire space because she needed something new for the new season. “So talking about new things; you know, new things, new season. I just bagged season 2 and I’m all ready for it. So I changed my interiors, I changed my furniture in the house, cos I got tired of them. I wanted something modern and cute. I had to change everything in my walk-in closet because my shoes were getting plenty and I started putting them on the floor. My clothes could not fit in my closet and I just needed to walk around my house again and change everything.”

5. What Mercy Eke wants you to expect in season 2: If you thought Mercy’s lifestyle was flamboyant before now, she wants you to expect even more. “This season 2, I’m hoping for the best. I’m hoping for a lifestyle show. I want to do more trips, maybe another car – I need a Lambo.”

6. She’s planning to trick her mom into moving permanently to Lagos: Mercy announced on the show that she wants her mom to come to visit, and if possible stay in Lagos with her forever. “What is she even doing in Owerri sef. She can actually visit and spend some months here before going back to Owerri. That’s if I will let her go back.”

7. The Mr H situation: Mercy finally put the rumours to rest. She has a new man and that’s that about that, but everyone’s gonna have to wait for a while to finally see him. “Mr H is someone, he’s there. He’s a man. But like I said, this is too early to expose him, because he’s been warning me. But hopefully, I can show you guys my Mr H. He’s handsome, cool, loving, caring. Soon, you’ll get to know who Mr H is.

Mercy Eke didn’t say this – but it’s perhaps the most outrageous thing about the premiere. Her idea of a workout session includes a few cardio workouts and a ton of twerking. It’s the most hilarious thing you’ll hopefully get to see more of on the show.

If there’s anything this first episode tells us, it’s that there is bound to be an abundance of hot tea this season with special appearances from Mercy’s team, family, friends and Mr H. Catch the second episode this Sunday at 6 pm on Africa Magic Showcase.

From October, DStv viewers should expect a lineup of new and thrilling content on DStv as the festive season approaches. As always, the show will also be showing on Showmax and will be available to Premium subscribers free of charge. The biggest survival reality TV show, Gulder Ultimate Search, is back, and Season 12 kicked off with a bang.

Gulder Ultimate Search Constestants

As with previous seasons, Gulder Ultimate Search seeks the strongest and fittest Nigerian who will spend weeks in the jungle to prove themselves the ultimate champion. With over 20,000 applications in the space of eight days, regional screenings in Lagos, Enugu and Abuja were tough to weed out those who wouldn’t survive the jungle’s harshness.

38 participants made it through to the next stage and had to face the rigours of boot camp to prove their strength. Remember the Man O’ War training from NYSC? This was ten times more grilling. The 38 men and women ran through several training courses that challenged their speed, endurance, eye to hand coordination and ability to swim.

Some dropped off immediately, while others seemed to shine amidst the complex tasks as the day progressed. We saw some faces stand out during the challenges. Chidimma Okeibe was one of them as she breezed through the regional screening with the ease of a ranger. Iniabasi Umoren also caught eyes from the onset as he didn’t let the intensity of the challenges faze him.

Traditionally, a 70th anniversary is referred to as a platinum anniversary as the gemstone symbolises true love, rarity and strength. This can very well describe Coca-Cola’s relationship with Nigeria since its introduction in 1951.

Coca-Cola's
CCNL Executives addressing media executives at the Coke at 70 press conference

To celebrate Coca-Cola’s 70 magical years of operations in Nigeria, a slew of activities have been mapped out as the company seeks to tell its story, emphasise its Nigerian roots, and engage fans and consumers with exciting activities at all touchpoints. If Coca-Cola’s previous events are anything to go by, you’d know they create the grandest and most memorable experiences.

Interested in following and participating in this journey? Here are four interesting activities to look out for!

Nigerians of Coca-Cola

The real magic of Coca-Cola is evident in its ability to be recognisable in virtually every country in the world. Additionally, the company has an extensive track record of sustainability initiatives that have served to improve the lives of hundreds of millions across the world, especially in Nigeria. It is with this insight that the company seeks to tell the stories of Nigerians that have been impacted by the company’s initiatives and its value chain, in a series aptly titled ‘Nigerians of Coca-Cola’. The testimonial series will lead up to the d-day of Coca-Cola’s 70th anniversary and will focus on select people of diverse tribes narrating their unique stories and how Coca-Cola has made a difference in their lives.

My Coke Moments

If you look long and hard enough, there are huge chances you are likely to come across an old picture of you or a loved one with a bottle of Coca-Cola, at a past celebration or a meetup with friends. Such is the magic of Coca-Cola; its pedigree of being present even in the micro-moments and memories of its consumers transcends generations. As part of Coca-Cola Nigeria’s 70th-anniversary celebrations, the company encourages consumers to share memories and photos of younger versions of themselves with a Coca-Cola in hand. Participants of #MyCokeMoments are also set to be rewarded with amazing items for sharing these wonderful memories with the world.

Share A Trip With Coke

Between the parties, shopping, cooking, and travelling, this time of the year can be pretty chaotic. To help ease some of this discomfort and share some of that magic, Coca-Cola hopes to create memorable experiences with its consumers, right before we swing fully into the holiday season. Nigerians plying popular bus routes in major cities such as Lagos, Port-Harcourt, Kano, and Ibadan will be provided free rides alongside gift items as part of the company’s anniversary celebrations.

Magical Anniversary Event

The campaign activities to celebrate the 70th anniversary of Coca-Cola in Nigeria will culminate in a grand event set for a later date this year. The event will feature the best of Nigerian entertainment and other attractions celebrating the rich, unique and diverse culture of Nigeria.

The celebration of Coca-Cola at 70 coincides with the launch of Coca-Cola’s new global philosophy, Real Magic – a new platform built from lessons of the last 18 months: that we can find the magic all around us when we come together in unexpected moments that elevate every day into the extraordinary. The past seven decades have been a celebration of love and a passion to refresh Nigerians one bottle at a time. With decades of stories, Coca-Cola is an indispensable part of Nigeria’s history and this celebration emphasizes its enchanting love story with the country in the most magical way.

Soro Soke: How This Yoruba Phrase Gave The Nigerian Youths A Voice

On October 8, 2020, only seven days after the 60th independence of Nigeria, the youth began a powerful movement. For the first time in a while, they came together as a united front to demand an end to police brutality.

soro soke

The End SARS movement began as an online agitation against a corrupt arm of the Nigerian Police Force, ‘Special Armed Robbery Squad’. But it soon became a fight against all forms of police brutality and moved from the streets of Twitter to the actual streets of Nigeria. The youths, assisted by forward-thinking Nigerians created a system that worked without any visible leaders or authority figures.

They figured out financing, legal, clean-up, health, security, and even tech-support. Within two weeks, the protest had become a well-oiled machine of young people tired of the nation’s state, coming together to speak in one voice. They needed a way to be heard. They wanted to speak so loudly, that the ruling class, made up of quinquagenarians and older, would have no reason to turn deaf hears to their request.

This need gave birth to what is perhaps the most iconic phrase from the entire movement – ‘Soro soke!’. It’s a phrase in Yoruba that simply means, ‘speak up’, but figuratively means ‘speak without fear or cowardice’. You can also simply say ‘Soro soke werey’, meaning ‘speak up mad person’ in Yoruba.

This phrase is a chant of encouragement for protesters, where whoever is leading the chants would say ‘soro soke!’, and the protesters will reply, ‘end SARS!’. It gave them a way to uniquely encourage each other to continue to fight and hold on to their common goal. It is a battle cry, a tone of rebellion, and a chant of unification against police brutality and terrible governance.

It has also become a word of warning laced with disrespect and contempt at anybody who has insensitive words about the movement. On Wednesday, October 14, 2020, Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwoolu got to feel some of this contempt as he attempted to address protesters. Many of them believe that his decision to stay on the fence about issues affecting the lives of young people in Lagos is disrespectful and insensitive. Hence, he felt the full force of ‘Soro Soke Werey’ as protesters chanted at him while he tried to beg them to retreat.

Yet, the word that is seemingly harsh and condescending can also be a form of endearment among friends. Used sarcastically or humorously, it can unite comrades in arms fighting for the same cause. It has become firmly rooted in the sands of pop culture and socio-political times in Nigeria.

‘Soro soke Werey’ or ‘soro soke’, just like the movement that made it a consequential part of pop culture, is going nowhere anytime soon. The supposed ‘lazy’ Nigerian youths have now found their voices, and nothing is going to take it away from them. As long as they have their voices, they’ll continue to chant, ‘Soro soke Werey!’ And the whole world will just have to stop and listen.

This story was first published on October 29, 2020.

As a content video producer at ID Africa, Seyi Adeyemi has his pulse on the best of Nigerian music, and he’s happy to share it with us all.

Seyi Playlist Shuffle

To start his day, Seyi likes to listen to Christain music from the likes of Nathaniel Bassey, but when he wants a bit of ginger, he prefers songs like ‘‘Anjade Loni Eledumare’’ by Ebenezer Obey. He’s a big fan of the jùjú musician as he cites the song ‘‘The Horse, The Man and The Son’ as advice for young people to avoid sycophancy.

To make great videos like Seyi does, you need to be in a ‘‘creative zone’’, and to get there, Seyi highly recommends Lo-fi music, which he says helps him concentrate. When he’s not listening to Lo-fi music, Seyi is jamming up Wizkid’sWizkid’s Made In Lagos Album, which he says has no bad songs.

Seyi is a true Yoruba boy, so don’t be surprised to find him listening to songs like ‘Amorawa’ by Wande Coal ft Burna boy or ‘Le Fenu So’ by Lord of Ajasa ft 9ice. If you’re looking for the best party music, look no further than Seyi’s music. None of that slow sitting down stuff, in his words, “if it doesn’t have shepketeri vibes, don’t call me.”

With songs to guide the way, we see a sneak-peek into Seyi’s life and work on Netng Playlist, and it’s nothing but fun vibes all the way. Watch his episode on thenet.ng/playlist and catch up on Season 2 as more episodes air every day at 6 pm.

Gulder Ultimate Search 12: Confusion Reigns As Clans Struggle To Work Together

Confusion was the order of the day for Gulder Ultimate Search contestants as they spent their first day in the jungle.

Gulder Ultimate Search
Toke Makinwa, Gulder Ultimate Search Season 12 host and Kunle Remi, Gulder Ultimate Search Season 12 Taskmaster

The contestants met this season’s host, Toke Makinwa and the taskmaster, Kunle Remi, as they arrived at the jungle entrance. Both were there to guide the new warriors on the beginning of their quest to become the ultimate champion.

The first sign of confusion was when they were instructed to take only the food items they could carry. The contestants scrambled for food items in a rush, which made the host and taskmaster angry for the disorganization. We’re yet to see if the council of elders will punish them for that, but in a way, they already were. Having to eat their yam dinner without salt should be punishment enough.

Then one of the contestants, Omoya of Clan Amo (Blue team), couldn’t find a leg of his sandals. We don’t know if there will be a punishment for that, so we’ll wait and see. On the way to camp, the three clans almost got lost as they tried to find their way to the camp area, following the landmarks left for them. When they eventually got to the camp, Toke and Kunle were already waiting for them.

Then they had to build their home. Even though the taskmaster provided them with all the items they needed, it seemed like a difficult task for our warriors. There was so much confusion about what goes where that Kunlre Remi had to step in thrice to call them to order and give them clues about setting up their camp. Thankfully, they were able to set it up just as dusk fell.

We hope they don’t continue to be this disorganized because, for the challenges ahead, they would need their wits and work together as a team.

Don’t miss any episode of Gulder Ultimate Search Season 12 as it airs every Saturday and Sunday at 8 pm on Africa Magic Showcase (DStv channel 151), Africa Magic Urban (DStv channel 153) and Africa Magic Family (DStv channel 154 & GOtv channel 2).

Gulder Ultimate Search Starts Hot As Contestants Spend First Night In The Jungle In Heated Argument

What started as a rocky first day in the jungle escalated into an equally shaky first night for the Gulder Ultimate Search contestants as they got into a heated argument.

GUS CAMP

As the warriors settled down for the night, after a saltless yam and palm oil meal, a heated argument ensued at one corner of the camp between Chidimma, Jennifer, Omokhafe and Omoya. The ladies accused Omoya of peeping at them while they were bathing. As the arguments heated up, the rest of the contestants stepped in to try and resolve the situation.

Jennifer said while the ladies were bathing, they had put their lantern a little distance from them so the light wouldn’t reflect on them, but they would still be able to see. Jennifer stated that Omoya had passed by them, knowing fully well that they were bathing, and he also took their lantern to go and fetch water.

As she explained what happened, Omoya began to shout and trade insults with Chidimma, calling her illiterate, while she said he didn’t have home training. Chidimma shed more light on the situation as she told the rest of the camp that when Omoya approached where they were, she told him to turn back as they were bathing. She said Omoya insisted that he wouldn’t look at them and still went ahead to take the lantern. She also questioned Omoya’s decision to fetch water when they went to bathe, saying why was it then he realised he wanted to get water.

Omoya’s defence was that the ladies were bathing on the roadside, which led to where he could get water and should have gone farther in. He also said that he assured them that he wasn’t facing their direction when they alerted him to their presence. This statement got Chidimma upset, and Mikel and Opeyemi had to step in to calm her down. The rest of the clan didn’t seem too inclined to involve themselves in the situation.

Eventually, they simmered down as they needed to get some rest for the day ahead of them. Who do you think was in the wrong, Omoya or the ladies? We wonder if the council of elders will have anything to say about what happened tonight.

Find out more as Gulder Ultimate Search Season 12 airs every Saturday and Sunday at 8 pm on Africa Magic Showcase (DStv channel 151), Africa Magic Urban (DStv channel 153) and Africa Magic Family (DStv channel 154 & GOtv channel 2).

After the tasking day that the Gulder Ultimate Search Contestants had to overcome, they meet at the place of talking drum to decide the fate of the losing team – Clan Irin.

Clan Irin
The three Clans (Iroko, Amo and Irin) at the Place of the Talking Drum

The three clans had their first task, the slippery slope, where Clan Iroko came first, then Clan Amo. Sadly, Clan Irin came last, and all six members – Mikel, Damilola, Chidimma, Ishmael, Omokhafe and Godswill, were at risk of going home.

The taskmaster, Kunle Remi, inquired from the team why they failed, and Chidmma suggested that the male-female ratio of their team left them with less manpower to help them complete the task. To that, Kunle said, “what a man can do, a woman can do better”, citing that having fewer men was not an excuse for them to lose.

At the place of the talking drum, there is a black calabash filled with black stones and one white stone. Whoever picks the white stone goes home. One after the other, Clan Irin members blindly picked stones from the pot. In the order they took

As fate would have it, they all had black stones when the clan members revealed their stones. The council of elders had decided to give them another chance to prove their worth as warriors worthy of becoming the ultimate craftsman. All the clans went back to the camp with joy in their hearts to prepare for another day.

Clan Iroko set the pace for team winnings as they were declared victors of the slippery slope task.

Clan Iroko
The Slippery Slope task is their first group task

The challenging course was in a muddy field that saw the clans crawl through a muddy barrel tunnel, climb over a steep A-board, climb across a monkey bar to a box containing puzzle pieces. They had to use their ropes to drag the box back to the starting point and assemble the puzzle pieces correctly.

Clan Iroko set a quick pace throughout the task as they were the first to crawl through the barrel tunnel with their rope. They quickly scaled the steep A-board using their rope to pull each other across to the other side. They made climbing across the monkey bars look easy with how fast they did it.

Using the rope, they tied the box and pulled it back to the start together. Once back at the beginning, Kunle Remi, the taskmaster, gave everyone a clue about the puzzle, “only one colour should face a side.” This clue didn’t take them too long to figure out, and they put the wooden puzzle pieces together to reveal the Gulder brand logo

Clan Amo came in second as they were able to finish their puzzle, while Clan Irin came in third, and their puzzle was not looking too good. The taskmaster declared Clan Iroko the winner and told Clan Irin to prepare to be at the place of the talking drum as one of them would be going home. Our warriors made their way back to the camp.
