Days after innovative Smartphone manufacturer Infinix Mobility launched its Zero X Pro device in Nigeria, the tech giant today announced the start of its #ZeroXChallenge.

Infinix Zero X Challenge

The Zero X Challenge is an initiative to inspire boundless creativity among Nigerians and empower the youth to explore beyond the ordinary. The Infinix ZERO X Pro was launched in an exclusive event on the 15th of September 2021 in Lagos, Nigeria and at the centre of the launch was the theme #SeeBeyond.

An important inspiration behind the device’s design and features was derived from humans’ desire to do the extraordinary, be more, and strive for the impossible: be it man’s first footsteps on the moon. The need to see beyond was the driving factor that led to the development of this product.

The Zero X Pro delivers cutting-edge innovation in Nigeria, redefining moonlight photography and offers super Moon mode for capturing shots of the moon. While unveiling the phone, photography experts TY Bello and George Okoro presented nature and lifestyle-inspired pictures taken with the revolutionary Zero X Pro camera, which possesses a super moon mode, night-selfie mode, periscope lens, and powerful hybrid zoom. The device, considered an affordable luxury, has set the stage for a whole new era of smartphone technology.

The Infinix Zero X  Challenge calls Interested individuals to take creative phone photos using any mobile phone, but all photos must fall within the lifestyle and nature category. All entries should also be posted on social media using the hashtags #InfinixZeroXChallenge and #ZeroXShotsChallenge and tag @infinixnigeria social media pages.

At the close of submission, the top entries will be selected, and these entries will be open for further delegation by the judges. Two best photos will be announced: one from each category to be the winner.

Selected entries from the initiative will be rewarded with a day with photography experts TY Bello and George Okoro with a phone photography masterclass and a free phone for the winners. At the masterclass, TY Bello and George Okoro will share insights on how to get into a creative mindset while using the ZERO X Pro to capture impeccable images of lifestyle and nature, including shots of the moon.

With the launch of the Zero X Pro and the photography initiative, Infinix continues its mission to create a world that allows the next generation to explore the universe and discover the endless possibilities ahead of them. The cutting-edge technology integrated into Infinix’s ZERO X Pro is the beginning of what the brand aims to achieve in its journey towards closing the gap between smartphone technology and stunning photography. Infinix seeks to empower today’s youth to pick up their smartphone and create something visually incredible through this device.

Big Brother Naija Shine Ya Eye came to an end on Sunday, October 3, 2021. Its sister show on Showmax, The Buzz, also drew the curtains close on Wednesday, October 6, 2021. The Buzz’s finale was a show special that had the top 6 and Ebuka Obi-Uchendu sit down for discussions about the season with host, Toke Makinwa.

Showmax

In one of the sessions with Toke, Whitemoney and Pere confirmed that they were now friends and their budding relationship wasn’t just a game in the house. Toke asked Pere and Whitemoney, “Both of you – Whitemoney, Pere, bromance, real relationship or just for the show?” Pere immediately replied her saying, “Bromance, man.” Whitemoney also added, “we are cool”, as Toke continued to push to get the truth. Liquorose also interjected that she absolutely believed both men were genuinely good with each other.

That question didn’t come as a surprise as Whitemoney and Pere had a tumultuous relationship during the show. Whitemoney was the only person to discover that Pere was a wildcard at the beginning of the show. This led Pere to believe that White had an informant in BBNaija and caused him to distrust the 29-year-old. And then Pere also discovered Whitemoney’s strategy and tried to foil it by throwing a wrench in his plans. They had several altercations afterwards, most small, a few – loud.

As the show came closer to the end, both men put their differences aside and became friends. In a world where we want more love and peace over hate, this is one of the best things to come out of the show this season.

Even though Whitemoney won this season by 47% ahead of Liquorose’s 22.99% and Pere’s 14.77% and the General was right about his strategy all along, Pere still maintains that he is happy for Whitemoney. He told Toke on the show, “it was amazing. I’m happy for him. It’s a great feat for him, so I’m excited for him. I congratulated him that night. I was excited and jumped up with him”.

Pere and Whitemoney will hopefully get to work on other projects together soon until we watch them again at the reunion. Since The Buzz and BBNaija are now over, make sure to check out more reality series and other shows you can watch on Showmax. Download the Showmax app on your iOS or Android device for the exclusive episode from the BBNaija’ Shine Ya Eye’ edition.

When the final episode of The Buzz started with the show’s wildest highlights, it was immediately apparent that it would be scorching, and it didn’t disappoint.

The Buzz

Her first guest for the show was BBNaija Shine Ya Eye host, Ebuka Obi-Uchendu. They started the conversation with Ebuka telling Toke his most significant highlights of the season. One of them was the twists like the wildcards, Maria’s fake veto power, new housemates, and Nini’s pranks. He also shared his personal wildest moments, saying Tega and Boma’s moments top the list. Ebuka also took a minute to praise Whitemoney, lauding him for playing the game well. As a final word on the show, the fashionista described the show in three words as unique, diverse, and free of disqualifications.

Next, the sixth, fifth, and fourth housemates on BBNaija joined Toke on the show. Emmanuel started off by saying all his achievements in the house were miraculous to him. The 24-year-old added that he was shocked to see himself in the finale. He felt like he didn’t deserve it since he made it there because of a game. Emmanuel also declared that he and Liquorose are in love. Liquorose also confirmed this later on in the show.

Angel also told Toke that she went into the house with the plan to toast all the boys so that they would not nominate her. She confirmed that she took a shower with all the boys in the house because she was comfortable in her body. She added that the bathroom was a communal one, so it shouldn’t have been a problem. Toke made her talk about the boys’ ‘packages’ and asked if that was her attraction to Cross. While she confirmed that he is packing, she said the real reason she got stuck was that he’s weird, funny, and the chemistry is there. Finally, she said, “I like Cross”. The 21-year-old ended the conversation about her being friends with Boma, saying they are not friends and they will never be.

Emmanuel and Angel also addressed the issue of them flirting. Emmanuel said, “so if I have a girlfriend, I can’t have a friend?” Angel then cleared that she was not the one who first started the flirting. She cited an example saying, “one time like this, I was chilling. It was a Friday night party. I went to dance with Emmanuel, jeje. Next thing, Emmanuel was like, kiss me. I said ‘shuo’!”

Cross talked about his fight with Nini and his tears afterwards. He said it was very emotional for him because she pushed certain buttons like his dyslexia. He also talked about how much he appreciates Angel and her kindness. He said they weren’t speaking, and Toke took on the place of a therapist to settle their issues.

Finally, the top three housemates took centre stage on The Buzz. Liquorose led the conversation, talking about how fulfilling it was to be the last woman standing. Pere jumped in on the conversation about making it to the top three. He also said he still felt like a winner, despite getting close to the grand prize and losing out. Speaking about Whitemoney’s win, he said, “it was amazing. I’m happy for him. It’s a great feat for him, so I’m excited for him. I congratulated him that night. I was excited and jumped up with him”.

The BBNaija Shine Ya Eye winner, Whitemoney said he didn’t expect his win at all, but each time he beat the evictions, he felt better about his chances. He talked about his hustles saying, he’s done a lot to survive except stealing, killing or defrauding anyone before. He added that Queen is a part of him he will remember for a long time, but he has no romantic feelings. He also said he was only catching cruise with JMK, but he liked Jackie B.

Liquorose cleared the air about Angel being a threat to her relationship with Emmanuel. She added that even though she isn’t friends with Angel, they are okay, and she genuinely loves her. Pere also talked about his ‘military-like’ tone, saying he only uses it when trying to control his emotions. Toke Makinwa ended the season most appropriately. She asked Pere and Whitemoney if they were friends, and they both confirmed that they were.

Hopefully, The Buzz returns next year when a new season of BBNaija begins. Until then, check out more reality series on Showmax to help relieve the intense feeling of missing your favourite housemate. Download the Showmax app on your iOS or Android device for the exclusive episode from the BBNaija’ Shine Ya Eye’ edition.

The Buzz – a BBNaija highlights show that aired on Showmax through the duration of the Shine Ya Eye Season, wrapped up this week. The show’s host, Toke Makinwa, charmed viewers with her witty personality and incredible style over the weeks.

Here’s a look at 9 of her biggest fashion moments on the show. Hopefully, you can pick up a fashion tip or two from the fashionista.

One of Toke’s most memorable outfits is this burnt orange custom 2-piece hand-beaded dress beautifully designed by Lola Baej, which she paired with green stilettos.

Forget your regular 9-5 suit, Toke’s monochrome blazer suit designed by ‘2207byTbally’ is okay to make you the best dressed at the office. She accessorised with blue earrings and ‘Mach and Mach’ stilettos.

Toke’s closet is arguably a dream for any fashion lover. This long-sleeve dress with sequin criss-cross strap by ‘Grandeur by Hoj’ feels elevated and fashion-forward. She paired it with ‘Balenciaga’ panty-hose and strap heels.

This Xtra Brides Lagos gown features structured exaggerated sleeves that we adore. It was a great idea to pair the orange dress with silver barely there heels. What’s not to like about that?

The fashionista looked lovely in Obsession by Mo’s superbly designed elegant and sassy outfit. The opulent long-sleeve embroidered minidress looks fantastic with black sandal heels and silver dangling earrings.

Toke wore an Emagine by Bukola blazer jacket and sheer slacks, which she teamed with Mach + Mach heels and a ‘Louis Vuitton’ purse. Dami Oke, a great stylist, created a stunning look for her.

This stunning mint corset top by ‘Julyet Peters’ steals the spotlight on its own, but when paired with lilac pants, it becomes the perfect formal look.

This Vicnate custom-made dress with slashed detailing is everything. She completed her look with a set of Boz Diamonds jewellery and black sandal shoes. Bernard Smiles’ ponytail hairdo was the perfect hairstyle for this delectable ensemble.

Toke looked stunning in a green velvet long-sleeve corset dress with crimson drop earrings. The Chinese sweetness is served in a black fringe weave with a swipe of scarlet lip tint.

Toke Makinwa’s glam crew – Stylist Dahmola, Makeup Artist Anita Brows, and Hair Stylist Bernard Smiles – absolutely delivered this season, and we’ll miss seeing their work on our screens on a weekly basis.

Obituary: Martin Mabutho – The Guru who Brightened Nigeria’s Entertainment Industry

While Nigerian pop music and musical talents were growing prodigiously in the early 2000s, Martin Mabutho was silently at the centre of it. Between 2005 and 2008, Mabutho, using his position as the brand manager of Mnet Africa, worked quietly but dedicatedly to export Nigerian music to other parts of Africa, building the foundation for its spread around the world, and attracting international interest and investment.

This ultimately led to Nigerian songs getting more exposure on Channel O which was one of the dreams of many African artistes at that time. Many of them excitedly sang about being proud that their songs were being played on Channel O. Mabutho made it possible.

Mabutho made this dream a reality for many Nigerian artistes, marking the beginning of the expansion of Nigerian music to TVs and radios across the continent and laid the foundation for the explosion of Nigerian music globally.

It wasn’t just music; Mabutho also played a crucial role in the recognition and expansion of creative talents in Nigeria through the MultiChoice Talent Factory and BBNaija reality TV. He never did any of this for personal credit or gains. What gave him joy was the growth of the Nigerian entertainment industry and how he contributed to fanning the ember that became a multi-billion naira industry.

When MultiChoice Nigeria where Mabutho served as chief customer officer announced that he passed away on Tuesday, August 24, 2021, in Cape Town, South Africa, after a brief illness at the age of 47, the news shattered many hearts in the Nigerian entertainment industry. With his position, he was able to act upon a long-standing dream of contributing significantly to Nigeria’s entertainment industry.

Mabutho was born on September 25, 1973, in Mafikeng, a town bordering South Africa and Botswana but many would argue he was Nigerian by heart. South Africans too called him their own. Such was his hearty continent-wide contribution to entertainment that everyone wanted him to adopt their nationality. He was a people’s person.

He attended the University of Botswana between 1993 to 1998 before doing a one-year programme in International Marketing at the University of South Africa between 2004 and 2005. He got an MBA in International Business from Henley Business School in 2014 and did an organisational leadership programme in 2018 at THNK School of creative leadership.

Mabutho, the Nigerian from another country

“Nigeria is full of fantastic opportunities for creative people and multimedia content creators. Beyond the size of the population, Nigeria’s rich cultural diversity also provides an unlimited supply of untold stories and exciting ideas that people at home and abroad continue to fall in love with.”

These words from Martin Mabutho reflect how much he believed in the huge potential of the Nigerian entertainment industry and his immense love for it. He was a man of few words and many actions and it reflected in his dedication to his work which he put so much effort into until he passed away.

Mabutho’s success did not come by chance. Before attaining this position, he climbed steadily through the ranks – working as the Brand Manager at M-NET from 2003 to 2007, before serving a two-year stint as the Sales and Marketing Manager at DStv Mobile.

He was subsequently promoted to the position of Head, Marketing and Sales (Sub Saharan Africa) for the same company. Next, he worked as the General Manager, Sales and Marketing for MultiChoice Nigeria, before settling in to become the company’s Chief Customer Officer in October 2018.

Mabutho’s remarkable success in the entertainment industry can be attributed to his keen knowledge of understanding customer needs while also driving and motivating a great team as he himself admitted.

He said: “As a leader, my job is to inspire my team to see the endless opportunities that the market offers, while doing our possible best to keep satisfying our customers and partners, by giving them so much more.

“We have an awesome dedicated group of people constantly listening to customer feedback and working together to build the DStv and MultiChoice brands in Nigeria and across Africa.”

To Mabutho, customer satisfaction was the key to delivering quality service and this has been the driving force behind MultiChoice’s success.

“The goal has always been and will always be customer satisfaction. This is the driving force behind what we do at MultiChoice, and it guides our direction and decisions as a brand.”

Mabutho’s seed in Nigeria’s entertainment industry has grown over the years providing a platform for undiscovered talents and up and coming creatives to shine. He strongly believed that the Nigerian entertainment industry despite its huge place in the continent was still an untapped market as there remained many more stories to be told.

In 2013 for example, when not many Nigerians knew who Burna Boy was, Mabutho tweeted that he had just listened to his song and described it as “something fresh outta Naija.” Burna Boy would go on to win a Grammy award.

tweet from martin mabutho twitter account

Mabutho’s love and conviction in the Nigerian entertainment industry were unparalleled. His friend, Geoffrey Mothooagae, who attended the University of Botswana with him told Thenet.ng that “the man (Mabutho) loved Nigeria and its people dearly.” The love was not something he expressed only in words as he worked hard to see to the growth of something he believed in.

Obi Asika, Nigeria’s entertainment entrepreneur in a post on social media confirmed Mabutho’s tireless effort to giving Nigerian singers opportunities to be heard.

obi asika retweet of martin mabutho

He wrote: “Speechless to be saying RIP to my man @igmartinmabutho , one of the ‘realest’ people I ever knew, a true brother and who I long adopted as my Naija brother from Botswana…God bless you bro until we meet again.

“I remember how between 2005-2008, you ran a personal courier service moving Nigerian music videos (must have been over 500) on our behalf to give our Nigerian talent exposure on Channel O. Without you and #Joehundah I am not sure we would have been able to break our artists, but we had people like you who promoted Naija music and agreed to support it everywhere and always. I will never forget that among many other acts of grace.”

Martin promoted Naija music and agreed to support it everywhere and always – Obi Asika. Photo: Obi Asika/Instagram.

It is no surprise Mabutho personally pushed for the growth of Nigerian music in his own way. After all, music has always been his desire according to his friend, Mothooagae.

“He loved music and during his spare time, he was a member of a popular music group at the time called Tribal Monks, as well as being very close to DJ Ski, who was the leader of the troupe and the up and coming DJ Fresh at the time, who went on to make it big in South Africa as we all know.

“The story goes he loved to brag in his usual jolly way about how he made the sound be the best it was, working behind the scenes as some “Sound Manager/Engineer” for all the foregoing, hence the nickname Sounds.”

Mabutho had as much interest in the music industry as he had for Nollywood. He believed that Nigeria has an endless pool of talent and that someone had to constantly provide a channel for bringing those talents to the screen to meet the huge demand of Nigerians, Africans and the rest of the world.

He said: “As Africa’s leading storytellers, our mission at MultiChoice is to empower Nigeria’s creatives to tell these stories in the best possible way, and to reach as many people as possible, across the continent and beyond.”

A heart of kindness and gold

Social media has been filled with tributes for Martin Mabutho since news of his demise was announced. Ebuka Obi-Uchendu who is the host of BBNaija and has worked closely with him in the past expressed shock at the news of his death, describing him as a “top, top guy.”

Tosin Ajibade, one of Nigeria’s leading bloggers, who has also worked with him on the BBNaija project in the past, recalled her last meeting with him.

She wrote: Yesterday, we lost Mr Martin Mabutho who was one of the liveliest, bubbly and easy-going men. I saw him last month at the press conference of BBNaija and he was like ‘Olori, we see once in a year now due to covid’ and I replied Yes.

“I remember having trouble with work in 2018 and he spoke to me, helped me with the issue and I saw it in a different way…When Mr Martin is giving a speech, you are laughing throughout because he cracks jokes in between and still delivers the message. I cried when I saw the news yesterday. It was unbelievable. I mean, we saw last month. I can’t watch the press conference video because he started it off. My head is spinning as I have questions about life, death and people we meet. My heart goes out to the Multichoice family (S.A and Nigeria). My consolations to his family and friends…I pray God rests his soul. My heart is broken.”

Asika told Thenet.ng that Mabutho was a true Nigerian who helped to grow the country’s entertainment brand.

He said: “Martin was a born Nigerian, a true brother, one of the most positive souls you could ever meet and he became family. Many of our music superstars and their fans don’t know his unseen but critical role supporting us to export over 150 Nigerian artists and their music videos onto Channel O between 2005-2008. He was a huge advocate and supporter of our music across all the Multichoice platforms and even beyond his core work and his friendship that must be acknowledged.

“We will miss him hugely and only have positive memories of this unselfish man from Botswana who everyday dreamt of better things for Naija, his adopted home. No words can fully capture Martin and his personality but all you have to do is ask anybody, do you know the Naija man from Botswana? Good night bro, rest up.”

Tosin Ajibade told Thenet.ng that “Mr Martin was a jolly good fellow. This is tough as I cannot put my words together. He had an aura of good vibes and he was a happy fellow even while on the job, you can’t help but laugh while he delivers his speech on stage. This is tough.”

Nigerian singer, Seyi Shay in her tribute expressed sadness over his death saying he changed her life twice.

“They say ‘the good die young/early/too soon’ I’m actually starting to believe this! Can someone please explain this paradox… Lost too many good ones too soon this year already. My heart can’t take it anymore! RIP Martin @MNet . U changed my life twice. We will miss u.”

Beyond his widely recognisable contribution to entertainment in Nigeria, Mabutho remained a people-first person, something that was evident in how he related with people professionally and personally.

John Ugbe, CEO, MultiChoice Nigeria, described him as someone who “was well-loved by everyone for his energy and hard work, his warmth, good humour and the creativity and positive attitude he always brought to the team.”

Mothooagae recollected that on his birthday, he surprised him by asking Nigerian footballer and former Manchester United Footballer, Jude Ighalo, to record a birthday message for him. He revealed that his nickname, Sound, came “about because of his love of being MC at events, energetically doing the mic sound check with his towel always hanging off the back pocket.”

At the memorial service organised in his memory, IK Osakioduwa, who is a radio and television on-air personality recalled how Mabutho made him feel at home in Calabar and knew places in the country many Nigerians didn’t even know existed.

He said: “Martin has done a tour of most states in Nigeria. I remember one incident when we were both in Calabar for different reasons. He was there on business while I went there on a government-sponsored programme. When I told him I was not comfortable at the hotel I was at, he quickly made arrangements for me to be at his own hotel and paid for it despite me telling him not to bother.

“Later in the evening of that day, he took me out to not the city centre but the hinterland to a place where we ate fish with our hands. He was truly a Nigerian.”

Beyond entertainment, he was a lover of football and was in the process of registering an accredited Manchester United supporters’ club in Nigeria before he passed away.

“Martin Mabutho loved football and was an ardent supporter of Manchester United. Photo: Brand Communicator/Instagram.

He will be missed by his wife Thato and their four children, his parents, colleagues, friends and the Nigerian entertainment industry at large because he truly touched the lives of everyone he came in contact with.

Why Gulder Ultimate Search is Nigeria’s best TV show ever

The social media rave that greeted the announcement of the return of the Gulder Ultimate Search reality TV show earlier in the month is a testament to the fact that Nigerians hold the show dearly to heart. It has been seven years since the last show took place, yet, many remember it like it was yesterday.

In the period when the show was off-air, many Nigerians would make reference to it, pointing out how much they missed it and wish it would come back. When a return was announced, organisers said they got more than 48,000 applications. The application website crashed as a result of the expected but overwhelming activities on the server. Social media and offline conversation around the return of the show has also continued to grow – reaching over — people in three days, according to analytics company PlaqadIQ.

The early 2000s ushered in several reality shows in Nigeria, a country full of diverse talents and an engaged consumer audience. From the weekly “Who Wants to Be a Millionaire” to Big Brother Naija and the  music-oriented Project Fame, Maltina Dance Hall, Star Quest, and Nigerian Idol, that period marked an important point in the transformation of home entertainment in a country of 200 million citizens

Some of these shows have since gone off the air around the same period the Gulder Ultimate Search did. Yet, they have not enjoyed the sort of clamour for their return as the latter has.

Gulder Ultimate Search enjoys a cult following because it presents a combination of fantastic and realistic elements woven to present the Nigerian trials and travails seasoned with hard work and tenacity that ultimately leads to the discovery of a treasure. The contestants become a sort of combination of heroes and villains who have to work hard, plan, strategise, and defeat their adversary in order to be the winner. It is the ultimate survival of the fittest.

For the younger audience, Gulder Ultimate Search may be considered a representation of that fantasy of searching for treasure on an island or forest battling imaginary monsters as a sort of superhero. To adults, the show may be perceived as a metaphor for human endurance through life sustained by the promise of success at the end.

As a show, Gulder Ultimate Search is pure entertainment. Participants are given different tasks regularly. Those who succeed extend their stay in the forest, while those unable to may be asked to leave. These tasks test the limit of their physical, intellectual and social abilities. Sometimes, the ability to work together in a team is the goal. Other times, particularly towards the later part, the individual capability to push to the limit of endurance is required to climb up the ladder.

Gulder Ultimate Search is similar to the American reality show “Survivor”, where participants are taken to a remote place and have to compete against each other for more than a month until a winner emerges. The iconic series has had 40 seasons and is considered the number one reality show in the US, and continues to influence pop culture.

As Allison Herman puts it, “Survivor is so integrated into the fabric of American culture it’s become an extension of the society it helped to shape. You can’t talk about America without talking about television; you can’t talk about television without talking about reality, which long ago crossed over from novelty to fact of life; and you can’t talk about reality without talking about Survivor, which showed how much resonance and profit there was to be found in the field. Imitators were inevitable and arrived in such numbers that they now make up a substantial share of modern-day programming.”

Although Gulder Ultimate Search has not had forty episodes yet, nor has it averaged seven million average viewers per episode, its followership based on reviews and reactions shows it is on its way to being one of the most-watched reality shows in Nigeria. And now that a new, revamped season is upon us, pundits say we should expect an unprecedented impact seeing this is the first time a social media generation would have the opportunity of engaging with the show, real time. We can’t wait.

Every season, BBNaija breaks old records and sets new ones, and this season is no different.

Whitemoney BBNaija Winner

At the start of Season 6, the organisers announced that it wouldn’t host SMS voting anymore, and voting would be restricted to the MyDstv and GOtv apps and the Africa Magic BBNaija website. Many people assumed the votes volume would decline due to the restrictions, but BBNaija fans have surpassed expectations again.

The season recorded a whopping 1.3 billion in total votes. Fans voted in their numbers to bring about an all season high since the show’s inception in 2017. Votes during the final week also hit a record high of 300 million votes.

BBNaija fans chose Whitemoney as their winner, and he led with 47% of the votes, closely followed by Liquorose with 22.99%. The second runner up, Pere, had 14.77% of the votes while Cross had 6.44%, Angel had 5.37%, and Emmanuel finished with 3.43% of the votes during the final week.

BBNaija All Season Votes

In past seasons, BBNaija pulled huge voting numbers, but none like this edition. At the end of BBNaija season 5, the show generated over 900 million votes, while Season 4 generated above 240 million votes. BBNaija Season 3 finished with over 170 million votes, while Season 2 had over 69 million votes. MultiChoice didn’t handle BBNaija Season 1, so this writer could not acquire the total votes data.

With every new season, BBNaija’s impact continues to increase while boosting its engagement across its platforms.

Speaking at the prize presentation, which held on Monday, October 4, John Ugbe, CEO MultiChoice, said, “Big Brother Naija was available to a UK audience for the first time. And for Showmax, there is a live screening in addition to an exclusive review show called the Buzz. These changes added to the overall entertainment value for the viewer’s experience and for all the fans.”

Big Brother Naija continues to exceed expectations every year, and we can genuinely say it is the pinnacle of reality television in Africa, maybe even the world.

BBNaija highlights many artistic talents, and this season, we had more than our fair share of fame bound contestants.

Sammie

Before Samuel Jacob Alifa, known as Sammie, became a contestant on BBNaija Season 6, he was a filmmaker and a student of Guidance and Counseling at ABU Zaria. Sammie displayed a camaraderie with all the housemates that quickly earned him a few fans in his corner. One thing that stood Sammie out was his inclination to the arts.

During their first wager task as a house, he acted as the director of the musical theatre play to portray the various cultures in Nigeria. Under his guidance, the house completed the task successfully and earned praises from Biggie and the fans.

Sammie greenlighted his skills again in the house during another task that required the housemates to stage a play. He not only showcased his talent as a filmmaker, but he also displayed an innate skill for directing talent.

On leaving the house, Sammie told Ebuka he wanted to “pursue his ambition – filmmaking”.

Now that the show is over, we can’t wait to see what projects and films he creates in Nollywood and beyond.

The Kunle Afolayan Production (KAP), the production studio behind some of Nigeria’s most iconic films in the last decade, has partnered with the Mastercard Foundation to train 300,000 young Nigerians in film, television, and motion picture production over the next three years.

Netflix

KAP produced widely-acclaimed movies like The Figurine, Irapada, October 1, The CEO, Citation and the recently released Swallow (an adaptation of Nigerian-American writer Sefi Atta’s 2010 novel), among many others that have earned global acclaim for their cinematic quality and captivating storytelling.

KAP and Mastercard Foundation announced on Monday, October 11, 2021, that the new generation of filmmakers would be trained through the KAP Film and Television Academy, one of the specialised services subsidiaries at the KAP Hub in Ikeja, Lagos, which was formally unveiled on Thursday, September 30, 2021.

The Academy was founded by award-winning Nigerian filmmaker Kunle Afolayan, who recently told The Guardian Nigeria after the opening of the KAP hub that his vision is “to set some sort of legacy that will help train a new generation of filmmakers.”

Despite being recognised as the third-largest film producer globally, the Nigerian film industry still faces a bevvy of challenges, including the development of talents through proper training and access to funds for filmmakers.

“As a result, very few practitioners can reach their full potential creatively and economically,” says Chidinma Lawanson, Nigeria Country Head at the Mastercard Foundation. “The Foundation’s partnership with KAP has the potential to enable at least 102,500 work opportunities for youth in the vibrant creative industry in Nigeria.”

The training, which is open to anyone between the ages of 18 and 35 years old, will leverage smartphone technology for the teaching and be conducted through the KAP App.

According to Afolayan, “the KAP App is a mobile learning application where multimedia content – which includes video and audio lessons, visual presentations, video simulations, and interactive testing – will be delivered to the students. It will allow students to have access to interactive learning content, industry professionals, community forums, an electronic library, a job board, financial support, contacts, and links, among others.”

The training programme will include The Masterclass Series, a virtual series of 20 episodes providing e-learning to aspiring filmmakers, covering several aspects of filmmaking from directing, cinematography, and the business of film using Afolayan’s acclaimed movie, ‘The Figurine’, as a case study. The virtual series will be free to watch on KAPtv’s YouTube channel.

The programme will also include two levels of certifications from professional institutions in screenwriting, sound, editing, directing, cinematography and production design, among others, and practical hands-on training. It will also link participants to employment or gig entrepreneurship activities, not only in the film industry via placements and internships but in related sub-sectors such as fashion, make-up, music scores, editing, and scriptwriting.

Selection will be based on a one-minute video pitch to assess each applicant’s level of skill, passion, and socio-economic status. KAP and Mastercard said 50% of the placements in the programme would be given to young women to encourage strong female participation.

150,000 young Nigerian women will be trained in film, television, and motion picture production over the next three years. This significant opportunity is made available through a partnership with the KAP Film and Television Academy and Mastercard Foundation.

Kunle Afolayan, who is the founder and CEO of the academy, told Netng the training will be done virtually through a dedicated application and will leverage smartphone technology.

300,000 Nigerians between the ages of 18 and 35 will be selected over the next three years with 50 per cent of the slot reserved for women. Globally, the film production industry has had a gender gap leading to fewer women in the areas of screenwriting, sound, editing, directing and cinematography.

A UNESCO  2018 Global Report revealed that only 1 in 5 films is directed by a woman and only 16% of the funding goes to films directed by women. With Nollywood being the third-largest movie industry in the world after Hollywood and Bollywood, this opportunity will greatly raise the stakes and provide more women with the right opportunity to fully participate in the industry and be involved in telling their own stories properly.

According to KAP Academy, the training programme will include a Masterclass Series which is a virtual series of 20 episodes providing e-learning to aspiring filmmakers, covering several aspects of filmmaking from directing, cinematography, and the business of film using Afolayan’s acclaimed movie, ‘The Figurine’, as a case study. The virtual series will be free to watch on KAPtv’s YouTube channel.

The programme will also include two levels of certifications from professional institutions in the areas of screenwriting, sound, editing, directing, cinematography and production design, among others as well as practical hands-on training. It will also link participants to employment or gig entrepreneurship activities, not only in the film industry via placements and internships, but in related sub-sectors such as fashion, make-up, music scores, editing, and scriptwriting

To ensure young people enrolled in the programme have access to the tools required for digital learning, free tuition and smartphone devices will be offered to students from less privileged backgrounds. These tools are being provided through a partnership with the Mastercard Foundation and its Young Africa Works program in Nigeria.

Selection will be based on a one-minute video pitch to assess the level of skill, passion, and socio-economic status of each applicant. The programme will also include two levels of certifications from professional institutions.

Nigeria’s unemployment rate currently stands at 33.3%, the highest in 13 years thanks in part to the economic consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic and the lockdown in 2020. Youth unemployment stands at 42.5% and this may continue to rise according to experts.

A much-needed intervention is now appearing, riding on a partnership between KAP Film and Television Academy and the Mastercard Foundation. 300,000 young Nigerians will be trained on different aspects of filmmaking from directing, cinematography, and the business of film over three years.

Nigeria’s Nollywood is the third-largest film industry in the world after its American counterpart, Hollywood and the Indian film industry, Bollywood. It remains a significant soft continental power and provides an avenue for economic development.

A release, issued yesterday, says young Nigerians between the ages of 18 and 35 will be selected for the training programme which will cover “areas of screenwriting, sound, editing, directing, cinematography and production design, among others as well as practical hands-on training. It will also link participants to employment or gig entrepreneurship activities, not only in the film industry via placements and internships, but in related sub-sectors such as fashion, make-up, music scores, editing, and scriptwriting.”

The training session will leverage phone technology and will be offered virtually. Less-privileged applicants will be provided with tools required for digital learning, free tuition and smartphone devices.

To encourage more young women to explore the opportunities in film production, 50% of the slot has been reserved for female applicants.

According to Kunle Afolayan who is the CEO and founder, the academy “focuses on growing the next generation of skilled filmmakers through the tutelage of veterans and film professionals who provide hands-on experience in diverse aspects of filmmaking to enrolled students.”

Selection will be based on a one-minute video pitch to assess the level of skill, passion, and socio-economic status of each applicant. The programme will also include two levels of certifications from professional institutions.
