From October 3, 2020 to October 20, 2020, Nigerian youths marched through the country, protesting peacefully at various locations and states. They wanted an end to the notorious police unit called SARS. (Special Anti-robbery Squad) who, instead of protecting the youths, go about harassing, robbing, and killing them.

While the protests lasted, we saw celebrities lend their voice to the cause both at home and abroad. Artistes weren’t left out, as they used their music to stand in solidarity with the END SARS protest across the world. Let’s delve into the top five songs that dropped during this period.

  1. ‘20-10-20’ – Burnaboy

Burnaboy has been one to always speak up against bad governance in Nigeria. It’s no news that he decided to lend his voice to this cause, despite initial controversies.

The track addresses police brutality and the Lekki toll gate’s happenings, where security operatives were seen shooting at unarmed protesters. The title is a reference to what is now known as the Lekki Massacre.

Burnaboy said, “I have not slept since 20-10-20. I close my eyes, and all I see is Lekki tollgate. I’ve seen a lot of violence and death in my life, but this is the one that has traumatized me.”

He closes the song with gunshots in the distance and innocent people begging for their lives. Wow!

  1. ‘END SARS’ – Fikky

During one of the END SARS protests in Lagos, a young boy named Fikky stood on top of a police truck and rapped a song he titled END SARS. This song went viral on Twitter.

Adey, one of Africa’s best producers, reached out to Fikky in a tweet and told him to contact him, as would like to produce the full song for him for free.

The song addresses the notorious police unit SARS and all the wickedness they do. When Fikky said, “The people meant to protect us are the ones killing us”, It hit deep!

  1. ‘We Don Tire’ – Orezi

‘We Don Tire’ is a song that describes the pain and hardship we all face daily as citizens of Nigeria. It emphasizes the fact that the rich keep getting richer while the poor remain the same.

Orezi says, “We the youths are tired, and we demand change.”

  1. ‘In My Country’ – Kida Kudz

In this emotional song, Kida Kudz calls out some of the names of those who have lost their lives before and during the END SARS protest. He also shares his experience with police brutality and dedicates the song to the Lekki Massacre victims.

  1. ‘Tell Us’ – Skales

This song addresses the government. In particular, Skales tells those in power to be accountable for their actions. He Reminds them that we put them in control and they should honor our demands.

He asked the government to bring the perpetrators of the Lekki Massacre to justice.

Overall

The END SARS protest was an emotional time for everyone. But more importantly, the youths of Nigeria became more aware, and those with influence demonstrated its power, using their voice, and their art.

Fast-rising rapper, Dayvon Daquan Bennett, popularly known as King Von was shot dead in an Atlanta Shoot-out between two groups.

king von

The rapper was shot at the Monaco Hookah Lounge car park in Atlanta, Georgia at around 4:20 AM when a physical altercation led to a shoot-out between two groups. Two police officers who were on the scene noticed the exchange and swooped in to help out. They ended up opening fire too.

Atlanta police Deputy Chief Timothy Peek said, “Two police officers who were working at that particular club, or lounge, noticed the altercation and engaged some of the people involved. There was an exchange of gunfire with police as well.”

APD, however, told Netng that they believe that King Von was shot by someone from the two groups before the policemen arrived at the scene.

“It is our understanding Dayvon Bennett, aka King Von was shot and killed during this morning’s shooting and we are seeing rumours being spread indicating he was shot and killed by APD officers. At this time, our investigators believe Mr Bennett was shot during the initial shootout between the two groups of males, prior to police responding and attempting to stop the shooting. Additionally, Mr Bennett was not located at the scene, but arrived at a hospital shortly after the shooting, via private vehicle. The investigation into this incident remains open and very active.”

His record label released a statement saying, ‘We are devastated by the untimely passing of King Von. He was a loving father, a dedicated member of his community, and amazing talent that just started to scratch the surface of his boundless potential. Von overcame incredibly challenging circumstances as a young man but never lost sight of what it meant to give back and uplift his community – O’Block. We are fortunate to have witnessed his growth and evolution but know he had so much more to give to the world. The Empire family offers our condolences to his family, friends, team, and fans during this very difficult time.’

In October, King Von shared his new album ‘Welcome to O’Block’ featuring collaborations with Lil Durk, Polo G, Fivio Foreign, and more. The album rocketed to Number 2 on Apple Music’s all-genre album charts. It was also the fifth-biggest streaming debut on Spotify, and he had the video for his song, ‘Armed and Dangerous’ scheduled to drop today.

Various artistes have trudged to social media to mourn the untimely death of this young star. Grammy-award winning rapper, Chance The Rapper tweeted ‘Wow. This year was so tough.  rip Von. God bless him and his family. I can’t believe it.’ Award-winning Nigerian artiste, Davido also shared his pain at the news via his social media platforms. He said, ‘RIP KING VON. We just spoke .. this can’t be real’.

Sharing a photo of himself and King Von, Grammy-nominated producer, DJ Chopsquad said, ‘My heart can’t take this. No bro. Why you? Why bro? Please just FaceTime me, bro. Why they had to take you. Ima see you again this shit ain’t over. It’s far from over. We still just getting started. RIP my Bestfriend. The only nigga to listen to me word for word from day 1. We sat on FaceTime for hours making songs together. Every bar had a meaning and every song was a part of our soul. Every moment meant something, and to grow with you made me feel like I was a real producer. I love you bro @kingvonfrmdao.’

The 26-year-old is the latest in a series of US rappers who have suffered untimely deaths. XXXTentacion was killed at age 20 in 2018 during a robbery, Nipsey Hussle, 33, was shot in Los Angeles in March 2019. Mac Miller, Lil Peep and Juice WRLD, recently died from drug overdoses. Pop Smoke was shot during an armed robbery attack in his home in February earlier this year.

On Sunday, November 8, 2020, the CEO of the award-winning technology-solutions provider, InfoGraphics Nigeria, Chinenye Mba-Uzoukwu, a forensic investigator with 9 years of experience, Avril Eyewu-Edero, and the founder of #NoGoFallMaga, Confidence Staveley, appeared on Public Eye with Funmi Iyanda.

The second episode of Funmi Iyanda’s talk show focused on cyber-crime and its crippling effect on Nigeria’s global repute and economy. The show kicked off with a chilling, anonymous interview with a cyber-scammer.

The unidentified man explained how he goes about his scams and blamed Nigeria’s failed system and unemployment for venturing into this line of work.

Mr. Mba-Uzokwu helped us get into the mind of the criminal. “Nigeria celebrates thieves. How do (cybercriminals) calibrate what is right and what is wrong? They rationalize (their actions) as a way for them to survive in a tough environment.”

Ms. Staveley went further to point out a potential opportunity for Nigeria in cyber-security, using the principle of demand and supply. “If Nigeria is the ‘cyber-crime capital’ of the world, then it could also be the cyber-security capital of the world. It requires the same skills for both.”

Ms. Eyewu-Edero proffered a viable solution to the problem of cyber-crime in Nigeria. “If we see public prosecution of high-profile scammers, it will serve as a deterrent to the others.”

Citation: Kunle Afolayan’s Deceptively Simple Yet Incredibly Complex Movie

Kunle Afolayan’s latest directorial effort is a juxtaposition of sorts. Deceptively simple, but incredibly complex, Citation combines several elements in the telling of one story. Warring elements of friendship and betrayal, love and manipulation, courage in the face of adversity, individual triumph over general progress, tell the story of a young lady on a quest for truth and justice.

Citation is a story that spans three African countries, carrying you on a nostalgic journey to the halls of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, Osun state, to the hot expanse of Senegal, and the watery coasts of Portuguese speaking Cape Verde.

The movie takes on a wholesome approach in tackling the sensitive and sore subject of sexual harassment, particularly in an academic setting. Rather than let itself be stifled by the negative aura of this subject, the movie is punctuated by love, music, humour, beautiful languages and heartwarming scenes, delivering a delicate balance to the tense stories of betrayal, manipulation and lies.

This work of art expertly displays the role perception plays in the expression of reality. In the search for truth, it becomes obvious that individuals have different interpretations of events dictated by their bias, prejudice and relationship with the involved parties.

Temi Otedola delivers a brave and brilliant performance in her debut role as Moremi, a young woman in search of justice. Haitian-American Jimmy Jean-Louis, is enthralling in his transformation as Professor Lucien N’Dyare, the well travelled, well decorated, respected but predatory, supervisory lecturer, who has come all the way from Senegal to spend his sabbatical at OAU.

Gabriel Afolayan, is earnest, cocky and supportive as Moremi’s boyfriend Koyejo. Ini Edo, Joke Silva and Ibukun Awosika (who appears as herself) deliver stellar performances in their supporting roles. There are also a number of cameo appearances including Seun Kuti and Kunle Afolayan himself, appearing briefly as Koyejo’s brother. In spite of its heavy star power, the plot does not get lost, neither does the story become laborious, but is carried easily by its protagonist’s poise and natural grace.

Conversations throughout the movie flow from English, Yoruba, French to Portuguese, forcing you to pay attention to nuances, expressions, body language, more than words. The Netflix distributed movie is Kunle Afolayan at his directorial finest, telling a beautiful, warm cross country story set against harsh lines. Temi Otedola delivers a quietly brilliant performance in her debut role as Moremi Oluwa, embodying the courage that anyone seeking justice in the face of adversity must wear.

Adeyemi Afolayan died about 24 years ago from stroke complications but his memory lives on. Ade Love, as he was fondly called, was an actor, director, producer and playwright. In 1966, he joined Moses Olaiya’s troupe and by 1971, he had created his own. He caught his big break in 1976, acting in Ola Balogun’s “Ajani Ogun”. According to Premium Times, it was also one of the first commercially successful Nigerian films.

He went on to appear in other films such as “Ija Ominira” (1978), in which he produced and played the lead role of ‘rebel leader’. He also wrote, produced and acted in  ‘Kadara’ in 1980. Some of his other notable works include “Taxi Driver 1 & 2” (1983 & 1987). Ade love produced eight feature films and composed a few songs, inspired by Indian movies.

He was a man in love with telling visual stories from top to bottom and some of his children caught the bug too. Kunle, Gabriel, Aremu and Moji Afolayan have kept his legacy and are all respected members of the Nollywood industry their father helped to build.
Kunle Afolayan

Kunle Afolayan is perhaps the most successful and dedicated of them all. Although his father tried to discourage him from acting and filmmaking, Kunle found his way back to the art. He had initially taken his father’s advice and studied business administration at Lagos State Polytechnic before taking a job at a bank. But he couldn’t stay away from filmmaking for too long.
He got his first taste of acting as a ‘waka-pass’ on his father’s set but it was Tunde Kelani that gave him his first real acting gig. He featured on the highly acclaimed “Saworoide” in 1999, playing the role of “Arese Jabata”. He went on to feature in a few other movies, all the while working in the Bank until 2005 when he resigned. He had gotten an idea for a movie and decided to enrol in a course in digital film-making at the New York Film Academy.
When he came back to Nigeria, he set up his production company – Golden Effects Picture. He has since gone on to produce multiple feature films. He lifted the bar for storytelling, production and directing in modern Nollywood with the release of his 2006 movie, “Irapada”. Some of his other producer/director credits include, “October 1”, “The CEO”, “ The Figurine”, “Phone Swap”, “Mokalik”, “Roti” and “The Tribunal”. He also acts in some of his movies, either in major or minor roles. Kunle Afolayan recently released Citation, a movie that takes on the sexual harassment rampant in Nigerian universities, featuring billionaire daughter, Temi Otedola, in her debut role.

Moji Afolayan

Moji Afolayan – Olayiwola is the Ade Love’s first daughter and his only child to hold a real role in the late filmmaker’s movie. She first appeared in “Iya Ni Wura” (1985) as an extra, then in “Idi Oromi” in 1991, playing the lead role. Kunle Afolayan told Punch, “ My sister, Moji, featured in his last film, Eyin Oku (Events after death), in 1992. She has continued to appear in various movies since then.
Moji has also dabbled into film production, releasing her first film, “Tojubole” in 2012. She appears more in Yoruba movies and is highly respected amongst her peers in that industry. She features in a lot of movies produced by her husband, Rasaq Olayiwola, popularly known as Ojopagogo. Some of her most popular movies include, “Orisa Opoki”, “Ikoko Emi”, “Se Ala Ni” and many more.
Gabriel Afolayan

Gabriel Afolayan is one of the most versatile actors in Nollywood, playing different roles and refusing to be boxed in. He got his first taste of acting in 1990 in “F Opawon”, a film produced by Baba Sala. But he became popular after his appearance in Tade Ogidan’s 2005 movie, “Madam Dearest”. His role as ‘Akin’ on Super Story’s “Nnena”, however, cemented his place in Nollywood.
Gabriel put in time and money into his training as an actor and it has made him one of the best acts in Nigeria. He first studied Theatre Arts at the University of Ibadan and later went on to study performing arts at the Identity Drama School, Brixton, London. He has featured in multiple movies, most of which are blockbusters. Some of his movies include, “Tatu”, “King Invincible” where he plays the role of Prince Adetiba, “Gold Statue”, and “Okafor’s Law”.
Asides from being an incredible actor, he is also a musician. He started his music career in 1997 as a backup singer. Under the name G-Fresh, he has released over thirty songs. He describes his music as ‘love ballads’ inspired by the likes of 2Baba, Banky W, Asa and Bez. He also owns a multimedia company, Studio 6 and has an endorsement with a major telecommunications company, Airtel Nigeria. He describes his role on a 2016 Airtel commercial as his most memorable yet. He told Pulse, it’s quite challenging when you have to act without saying a word. It says a lot about you going into the zone of your character, so we have to play a lot with facial expressions and body language.”
Aremu Afolayan

Aremu Afolayan is the youngest of the four popular siblings upholding their father’s legacy. He was also the last to join Nollywood, only appearing in his first movie in 2007. He told Encomium Magazine that he had joined acting because of his passion. He said, “I didn’t join the movie industry because my father was an actor, but joined simply because I am in love with the profession.”
Just like his elder sister, Moji, he appears mostly in Yoruba films. He believes that Jaiye Kuti’s 2008 movie, “Ewon Laafin” helped make him a popular name in the movie industry. He has since appeared in other movies like, “Idamu Akoto”, “Ahun”, “Gbajumo”, and “Omolakeji”. Just like all of Ade Love’s children, Aremu also dabbled into production releasing movies like “Ina” and “Ina Fitila”.

Pleasure Vs Precaution: Nigerian Men Talk Contraception

Sex is exciting and fun but also quite risky. There are many things to worry about from unwanted pregnancy to STDs. That’s why contraception was born.

Contraception

I got into a conversation with a male friend about contraception and how he feels about using condoms during sex. He told me he hated condoms, that he felt like his whole body was trapped when he used one, and that feeling distracts him so much that he loses interest in the sex. So he stopped using them completely.

I was thinking, “aren’t you worried about getting an STD or getting someone pregnant?” But he said he’s mastered the pull-out method, plus he doesn’t sleep with anyone he doesn’t trust. So I got curious. Do all men feel this way about condoms? Here are what some other men had to say about condoms vs pull-out methods.

Folarin

Pulling out is stressful. No sensible person thinks 30 mins of intense sex is worth an STD and/or a child. I don’t prefer condoms but it’s definitely the safer option.

Kenny

We don’t like condoms as it sort of masks the whole process and you know how inconvenient and unnatural masks are. And pullout is never stressful because you know you’re not ready to be a father. But a guy like me asks questions before the sex to make sure she’s not ovulating so I’m comfy.

Your mind is 100% on the sex as you’re trying to please her and one of the ways you do that is trying to hold back your ejaculation so you’re constantly thinking “oh I can’t afford to cum now”.

So when you’re about to cum, you’re well aware and you can do the needful.

Daniel

I hate wearing condoms so pulling out is the best option, don’t really find it stressful except someone is bursting my head… But then thinking of making babies is all you need to pull out successfully 😅. Pulling out doesn’t affect the sex at all… Game will still be 🔥.

Ore

The only benefit of not using a condom is the pleasure. It feels better. Personally, I use condoms. It’s safer.

I spoke to Anita Aiyudu-Adesiyan, a Reproductive and Behaviour change advocate and she gave some insight on the conversation on pleasure vs precaution; weighing heavily on the side of safety.

“Some men believe that using condoms are not as pleasurable as doing a skin dive during intercourse. Using the pull out method is also sometimes perceived to be relatively safe when avoiding pregnancy. The truth is, not only do they put themselves at risk of contracting sexually transmitted diseases, especially with more than one partner, but the risk of pregnancy is also higher because it is almost impossible to determine if no semen has been expelled during intercourse. Pre-ejaculation might contain sperm, which means that even if you do successfully pull out every single time, there’s still a chance of pregnancy.

The pleasure of sex comes with the emotions shared between a couple and using a condom should not deter the man from reaching climax. You can build your physical intimacy before penetration.

If you are in a committed relationship and are open to using the pull out method, you and your partner must get tested before engaging in unprotected sex, regardless of your sexual history. It is also important to discuss with your partner and decide on the best contraceptive method that works for you both. If you’re not in a committed relationship, it’s important to practice safe sex and get tested before and after each sexual partner.”

There you have it, folks! Sometimes, pleasure is all in the mind. Sadly I couldn’t get what women prefer. But that’s another article in the making. The most important thing is that in all your fun-seeking, stay safe.

Five Ways Y’ello Star Will Change Music Talent Shows In Nigeria

The debut season of MTN Nigeria’s new music talent and capacity show, Y’ello Star began on Saturday, November 7, 2020. The new show already screams of innovation and a new way of doing things.

Y'ello Star

With Y’ello Star’s interesting approach to music talent shows, they are bound to inspire other show creators to do better. Here are five ways Y’ello Star will change music talent hunts in Nigeria.

1. New show formats: Y’ello Star takes a very different approach than most Nigerians are used to seeing. Thanks to the pandemic, there is no live studio audience this season. They are also replacing evictions with relegation, which means that even though a candidate will lose access to the grand prize, they’ll still have access to all the resources the show offers. The judges also get a say in who makes it to the top position from amongst the contestants by using a ranking system.

2. Better prizes: Most talent shows in Nigeria operate a ‘winner-takes-all’ approach. But Y’ello Star has created a new prize system where every contestant can benefit from the show. They are partnering with Berklee College of Music in the U.S and Henley Business School in the UK to grant every contestant access to resources they may never have had the privilege to get. They also get consolation prizes for their time on the show.

On the other hand, the top 5 finalists get a scholarship to attend the Berklee 2021 summer music programme. The MTN Y’ello Star gets a car, recording contract, newly-furnished apartment with a home studio, and a N5 million cash prize. The winner also gets to record a song written by six-time Grammy award winner, Malik Yusef at the Berklee Power Station in New York.

3. Actual Absorption into the industry: Most of the time, contestants end their journey into the Nigerian music scene when they leave the talent show they initially appeared on. But, contestants of MTN Y’ello Star are going to receive all the resources and help they need to continue as members of the music industry, regardless of whether or not they win.

4. Online auditions: This year, MTN Y’ello Star held auditions online, giving thousands of applicants all over Nigeria, and out of the country the chance to compete. After this year, and even after the pandemic ends, we expect many talent shows to continue to hold auditions online. This is because it is less expensive, allows more people to participate, and gives the show a wider range of talents to pick from.

5. New voting methods: Usually, the public decides who wins music talent shows. But this time, MTN Y’ello Star’s incredible judges made up of the talented Banky-W, songbird Omawumi, and six-time Grammy-award winner Malik Yusef, get to hold the cards on who makes it through. They use a ranking system where they place contestants on a chart based on the strength of their performances. The public would then get to save someone from amongst the least-ranking contestants.

This allows for the most talented and consistent acts to make it far in the competition and levels the playing field. Viewers and contestants will be sure that the winner emerged on more than just popularity. More talent shows may want to try this voting process as it gives them a chance to brag about churning out top-notch professionals into the industry.

Davido will release his third album, ‘A Better Time’, as a follow-up to his highly acclaimed ‘A Good Time’ album on Friday, November 13, 2020. In typical OBO manner, he is already proving that he will show up, and show out. The number of features on the album proves it will be anything but mediocre

A Better Time

The 27-year-old features 14 artistes across 11 songs on the 17-track album. Nine out of the 14 featured artistes are from Ghana, South Africa, Kenya, and the United States. The other featured artistes are Nigerians. We shine the light on the nine international musicians helping Davido stamp his name on the world music map.

1. Nicki Minaj: Nicki Minaj is one of the most successful female rappers of all time and has received numerous awards and nominations to prove this. After breaking several records, she is now making a move to one of the world’s biggest music markets, Africa.

She has found a way into the Nigerian music scene and is proving that she is a true friend of the industry with this new feature. This is the rapper’s second collaboration with a Nigerian artiste this year, following her feature on Mr Eazi’s ‘Oh My Gawd’.

Davido talks about how he got Nicki Minaj to collaborate with him on the song, ‘Holy Ground’ via Instagram DMs. He told Complex News’ Pierce Simpson how he decided to DM Nikki about the song and was just glad she responded and jumped on it. He says, ‘I was like, let me DM Nikki, maybe she’ll get on it. Let me try my luck. I knew she followed me, so I DM’d her. She hit me right back, and said “send it”, just like that.’

2. Chris Brown: Chris Brown has been releasing hit songs since he was 15 years old. Throughout his career, he has received 17 Grammy nominations and numerous others, but he has stayed focused on the music. He is always working to stretch his abilities and reach and has chosen to do that with pop music from Africa – first with Wizkid and now with Davido.

Chris Brown has developed a bromance with Davido that is proving to bear hit songs. He featured on one of the artiste’s biggest songs yet, ‘Blow My Mind’ and will feature on this new album. If the song is anything like the last one, then we may have just found yet another magical duo, and maybe even Davido’s ticket to a Grammy nod.

3. Young Thug: This will be Young Thug’s first collaboration with a Nigerian act and a vital one to his career. The Grammy-award winning rapper has been on the up-and-up since 2011 after he released his mixtape series, ‘I Came From Nothing’. But he only attained mainstream success after his 2014 singles, ‘Stoner’ and ‘Danny Glover’. He has released one studio album, 19 mixtapes and three EPs throughout his career, receiving several awards for his hard work.

He has worked with Future, J-Cole, Usher, T.I, Rick Ross, Kanye West, and more. He now joins Davido and Chris Brown on ‘Shopping Spree’ that promises to be one hell of a bop.

4. Mugeez: If you don’t know Mugeez, you at least know R2Bees, the incredibly talented duo from Ghana. He is one half of the duo. Mugeez and his cousin Faisal Hakeem are one of Ghana’s most notable talents, with several hit songs and collaborations with different Nigerian acts.

The award-winning artiste previously worked with stars like Wizkid, Yemi Alade, Wande Coal, Stonebwoy, Sarkodie, etc. He will bring his interesting mix of hiplife and reggae to Davido’s album on the song, ‘Mebe’.

5. Lil Baby: Dominique Armani Jones, aka Lil Baby, has been making moves in the American music space since he attained mainstream success in 2017 with his mixtape, ‘Perfect Timing’. He is one of the most prominent trap music acts, with several major nominations, including nods from the Grammys, MTV VMAs, and BET Awards. He is teaming up with a Nigerian act for the first time with his collaboration on ‘A Better Time’.

Davido already released the visuals for the song, ‘So Crazy’ with Lil Baby. While they’ve received a ton of criticism for it, the song is still a certified vibe. Davido has mastered the art of getting people to fall in love with his songs, whether or not they initially liked it, and that’s definitely what will happen with this song too.

6. Nas: Nas is hip-hop royalty. He is regarded as one of the greatest rappers of all time. Since he began his music career in 1991, he has released 12 albums and received numerous nominations and awards. Davido is also an accomplished international act, so this coming together of two royals in their own right will only birth magic. We can’t wait to hear what beauty they’ll create on ‘Birthday Cake’.

7. Hitboy: When a video of Davido working with Nas and Hitboy in a studio first landed on social media, it drove his fans into a frenzy, and rightfully so. Not only was their favourite artiste working with hip-hop royalty, but he also had two-time Grammy award-winning rapper and producer, Hitboy on his side.

Chauncey Alexander Hollis, popularly known as ‘Hitboy’ has been creating hit songs for the past twelve years. He has worked with some of the biggest names in music around the world such as Kanye West, Jay-Z, Lil Wayne, Eminem, 50 Cent, Mary J. Blige, Chris Brown, Snoop Dogg, Justin Bieber, Drake, Kendrick Lamar, Beyoncé, and several others. And now, he is about to add Davido to the list of superstars he’s worked with.

8. Sho Madjozi: Sho Madjozi is one of the hottest stars out of South Africa right now. She came into the limelight as an actress on a telenovela, ‘Isithembiso’ in April 2017. She then released her debut single, ‘Dumi HiPhone’ later that month. Since she first broke out into mainstream media, she has released one studio album, ‘Limpopo Champions League’, and gone toe to toe with some of the biggest stars across Africa for a chance to win a BET Award. She joins the self-acclaimed ‘Mayor of Lagos’, Mayorkun and Davido on his track, ‘I Got A Friend’ for his third album, ‘A Better Time’.

9. Sauti Sol: They are one of the biggest afro-pop bands in Africa. The Kenyan group is made up of Polycarp Otieno, Savara Mudigi, Willis Chimano and Bien-Aimé Baraza. They’ve been creating beautiful music together since 2005 and released their debut album, ‘Mwanzo’ in 2008. Since then, they’ve put out four other studio albums and an Extended Playlist (EP). The group has received over 120 nominations and over 40 wins, including a BET nod, and two MTV award wins.

Sauti Sol has cultivated a special relationship with Nigerian music, creating songs Nigerians will enjoy, as well as touring the country. They have collaborated with artistes such as Yemi Alade, 2Baba, Maleek Berry, Patoranking, Burna Boy, and Tiwa Savage. Davido now joins the exclusive list of Nigerian talents the group has collaborated with as they feature on ‘On My Way’, a track off his new album.

Nigerian Actress, Dakore Egbuson was moved to tears as she watched the story of Trust Inonse, a beneficiary of MTN’s Scholarship Scheme for Blind Students (SBSS). The scholar’s experience was broadcast at MTN Foundation’s scholarships event on Thursday, November 12, 2020.

Trust Inonse was four years old when he completely lost his sight. While his mother sat and cried in the bedroom upon receiving the diagnosis from the doctor, Trust Inonse walked up to her and begged her to wipe her eyes because he knew that his disability would not limit him.

Characterised as an individual with ambition, Trust diligently focused on his studies through his primary and secondary school education and eventually went on to bag a scholarship grant from the MTN Foundation.

Speaking on his reaction to receiving the scholarship grant, Trust Inonse said, ‘I was really excited and the prospect was bright for me. The scholarship meant that the burden of funding my education was lifted off my family and I was really proud of it.”

Trust did not only graduate from the University of Lagos (UNILAG) with flying colors in 2018, the Mass Communications graduate also got an opportunity to intern at Megalectrics, a media organisation in Lagos. Upon completion of his National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) programme, Trust was offered a permanent position at the company because of his outstanding performance during his internship programme.

With the aim of equipping scholars with the requisite skills needed to perform excellently well in the workplace, MTN Foundation organised an employability workshop for graduating scholars of its scholarship schemes. These scholars were also inducted into the MTN Scholarship Alumni base at MTN’s event.

The Foundation also awarded scholarships to over 360 new university students with 10 of
them being the top performing students in the 2020 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examinations (UTME).

While struggling to keep tears from running down her cheeks after watching Trust Inonse’s story, Dakore Egbuson said, ‘Oh my goodness, I am so emotional right now. Trust Inonse you have succeeded, you’re amazing and we are so inspired by your story. There is no reason why we cannot accomplish what we were born to achieve if only we would look beyond our challenges and obstacles and find that thing that pushes us.’

Corroborating her statement, Trust Inonse, says he had an internal drive to just keep moving. He said, ‘Never say die, that is just it. Understand that no matter what it is, it could have been worse.’

The scholarship event had in attendance, Dr Omobolaji Johnson, Iyinoluwa Aboyeji, Rolake Akinkugbe- Filani, and Olubayo Adekanmbi, who engaged in a fireside chat themed: “Insight. Influence. Impact.”

The session was moderated by Nigerian TV Host, Bolanle Olukanni. The MTN scholarship scheme is an annual scholarship award that seeks to recognize and reward qualified high performing students. It is made up of the MTN Science and Technology Scholarship Scheme and the MTN Scheme for Blind Students.

Popularly known as Giasebaba, Akinade Ibuoye is a Nigerian gospel singer. Following the release of his DJ Tee-directed music video for “Movie Song” back in March, Gaise returns with his EP titled ‘Logo.’

Without further ado, let’s delve into my first thoughts on listening to the album.

  1. Jesu Ni Logo ft. Gil Joe & Marizu

The vocals on this song are everything. You could hear the excitement of the audience immediately Marizu took over. I love the synergy between them. This song reminds you of why you’re in God’s presence.

  1. Mandem ft. Still Shadey

This is for all my groovy Christians in the house. This song makes it easy for trap music lovers to hold this track skin-tight and never let go. Still Shadey’s rap verse killed this!

Making a name in the Afrogospel space, you can tell Gaise put thoughts down into knowing who to feature on this track. This song will have you breakdancing during Sunday service.

  1. Fly the Logo ft. Joe Kay, Limoblaze & Nolly

This song is proof that you can never go wrong with Afrobeats and Jesus. The fact that Joe Kay brings the Ghanaian flavor on the track and Nolly adds Igbo vocals to it makes me think I just had a balanced diet. How about you?

  1. Logo (Re-imagined)

After a live recording of this track, it was released in March. The instrumentals added an entirely different taste to the song. I loved it. It just makes you want to move your body along to the rhythm while craving more sound from Gaise.

  1. Logo

Although it dropped as a single in 2019, this song will make you dance at any given time. I don’t have much to say about this song, but the enthusiasm put into it is everything. I love it!

Final thoughts

This album is satisfying to listen to. It’s the type to create an atmosphere for you with God while giving you a chance to groove in God’s presence, afrobeat style.

I enjoyed this album, and I hope to see more from Gaise Baba as he is fondly called. Meanwhile, keep repping Jesus to the world, one day at a time.

‘A Better Time’ Album Review, from the biggest Davido fan you’ll ever meet

Davido is back with A Better Time, his fourth studio album. From the days of ‘Aye’ and ‘Dami Duro,’ the Nigerian act has proved to be one of the most consistent hitmakers of the past decade.

It looks like ages ago, but it was just last year that he released his third studio album A Good Time. He’s now delivered what appears to be a much-deserved COVID-19 relief, to his community of fans. It’s nearing the end of 2020, a year of calamities, and we all should be grateful that Davido and his team are bringing us anthems that should usher in better days.

A Better Time was due for release in July, but due to the pandemic, Davido took a break from social media and moved the release date of his album. As the recent protests against police brutality gained momentum, he spoke vocally in support of the #EndSARS movement and pushed his album’s release date yet again.

I stayed up all night to listen as the album dropped, and I’ve been listening since. Now, let’s delve into my first thoughts.

If you know me, you’ll know I am the biggest Davido fan you’ll ever meet. Maybe that’s why it’s so hard to pick my top five favourite songs from the album. It had me dancing all through!

So instead of the usual five songs, let’s look at my top nine songs off the album. Enjoy!

  1. ‘Tanana’ ft Tiwa Savage

I don’t know if this song is giving me reggae vibes or old school dance vibes. But there’s something about the lyrics that makes it loveable. Tiwa Savage bodied her verse completely., ‘Bad nigga from Bariga, you wan play me like Laliga.’ Damn Tiwa!

I am looking forward to more songs from this duo. Enough of all that Wizkid-ish.

  1. ‘Heaven’

Okay, can we all admit that Davido outdid himself on this song? The beats on this song are really smooth. For me, this song is a standout on the album – it is even one of the few tracks he appears alone.

Davido showcases growth in this sound and lyrics. I wouldn’t easily call this my fave, but the beat is everything for me. The saxophone, in the end, is mind-blowing!

  1. ‘FEM’

FEM dropped following Davido’s return to social media after some hiatus. I love the killer intro of this track.

This song served as one of the anthems of the #ENDSARS protest. ‘I dey live my life, man dey turn am to shoot on sight’ is definitely my favourite line.

  1. ‘Holy Ground’ ft Nicki Minaj

Why will Davido put Nicki and Speroachbeatz in one track!

This song is absolute madness. Nothing beats Nicki Minaj saying ‘Naija to the world.’ I’m so impressed by the transition from her rap to singing. This is just loveable.

  1. ‘Very Special’

‘Very Special’ makes me want to believe in love all over again.

This song took me back to the time of ‘Aye.’ The intro is everything. ‘Mo kan ma sope…’ is the line for me. If your lover plays this song for you, make sure you keep them!

  1. ‘The Best’ ft Mayorkun

Mayorkun is a gem, we must protect him at all cost. Once I hear ‘Ge Ge’ on a track, I know it’s about to be madness.

When Mayor said, ‘See I learned from the best oh, the best, Davido..’ I loved it. Is there a way I can play all the songs at once?

  1. ‘I Got A friend’ ft Mayorkun and Sho Madjozi

Wherever you put Mayorkun on a song, he is sure to deliver. I imagine that lots of groomsmen will be making a badass entrance into wedding receptions with this song.

Especially when Davido said, ‘I am here to introduce you to a couple of my friends.’

Whatever Sho Madjozi was saying, she killed it. The deep bass on this song makes it enjoyable and almost unreal. Each of the features bodied their verse wholesomely. We also see Davido taking a risk by stepping outside his comfort zone.

  1. ‘Jowo’

One of my top three faves. Although it is the second song on the album, this track is a certified banger. This song will have you crying at 2am praying to God to find true love.

To whom it may concern, if you play ‘Jowo,’ for me, then I am all yours. The blend of bass and drums on this song gives it a perfect finish.

‘Look into my eyes oh baby, will you be my wife oh baby…’ I am definitely going back to this. I am in love!

  1. ‘La La’ ft Ckay

This has to be my personal favourite on the album. The bass, drums, and guitar on this song is fire. This song can make you forget everything you are doing and get in the groove.

‘Selena lokosa ehh, Ah Lokosa, Awilo lokomba…’ is the line for me. I am about to rinse and repeat this song all over and again. There’s something about the beat and lyrics that make me want to dance so badly. This song is a vibe!

Overall Rating

This album is very good from top to finish. The production is lit. I feel Davido has gotten to the point where he has silenced his haters, and they have no choice but to love him.

Unlike other albums, this project fills you up as it doesn’t need to grow on you. Although there are some skips on the album, I can tell you for a fact that it was hard to pick my fave ‘cos there are a lot of excellent tracks on this project. Way to go, David!

Although it is a heavily collaborative album, everyone bodied their verses, without making Davido look bad. Then there is also something about the way Davido bodies South African beats. It’s mind-blowing.

I will rate this album a solid 8.5 out of 10. Don’t blame me – I’m just a shameless fan.

Cubana Chief Priest

Glenmorangie has long been the choice of the innovative, industrious, and charismatic man and no one represents these characteristics more than Cubana Chief Priest, who is proud to be affiliated with Glenmorangie.

Speaking to Chief Priest on being a friend of the brand, he had this to say, “A single malt whisky tells a great story, with its complexities of flavour that permeate whether taken on the rocks or straight, as with life. This resonates with my life and my story, and there is no better time to be associated with this brand than now.”

As a celebrated barman and businessman, Cubana Chief Priest sits in great company with award-winning expressions of Glenmorangie.

After a rigorous and competitive selection process, the MTN Y’ello Star opening gala held on Sunday, November 15, ushering the final 14 contestants to the world stage.

Here are five outstanding things that got us excited about the Gala

The opening performance – the final fourteen contestants opened the Gala to a thrilling performance of medleys and mashups, giving a glimpse of what is to come farther into the competition.

Blue was the colour of the night – Judge Omawumi and the host, Hilda Baci, both looked stunning in their blue ensembles. Hilda rocked a floor-length glittery gown and neutral makeup, while Omawumi opted for a knee-length monosleeve gown, matched with her customary afro. They both looked stunning.

Dashing looking men – the men were not left behind at the opening Gala. Host Tobi Bakre full of energy looked delectable in his sparkly suit to fit, while judge Banky W looked razor sharp in his gold striped blazer.

The contestants’ attires – it was a big night for the final fourteen contestants as they were officially introduced to audiences across Nigeria. Decked out in befitting attires, the contestants looked regal and ready for the journey ahead.

Spectacular performances – after their opening performance, the contestants proceeded with their individual performances of the night. For which they were scored by the judges.
