Nigeria’s global music star delivers slow, R&B bangers ready for both dancefloors and bedrooms
There is something to cheer about in October as Wizkid blesses us with the release of his new album Made In Lagos (MIL) and it’s exactly how we thought it would be. Starboy announced that he is dropping his much-anticipated album on the 30th at 11:11 pm, West African Time worldwide on his social media. As expected the fans went nuts and couldn’t wait to listen to the rest of the album.
Made in Lagos is one of Wizkid’s most calm albums yet and a memorable comeback from starboy. Leading with smooth bass and authoritative saxophone, Reckless opens MIL and sets the tone for the rest of the album. The single discusses the doubt Wizkid has been met within his career and those who “pray for his downfall”, but he also reflects on the privilege he has and the importance of not taking said blessings for granted.
Wizkid features Burna Boy on ‘Ginger’ which does not disappoint and reminds us why the two are amongst the biggest stars in Nigeria. This collaboration has me hoping we’ll see more of their collaborations in the nearest future.
In the repetitive chorus, Ella Mai demands her love interest “come and get a piece” in Piece of Me, it provides an enjoyable tune likely to be received positively by fans across the world. Blessed, which is my favourite, lays emphasis on how great he is. The relaxed ‘Gyrate’ finds Wizkid at his best: these are slow, R&B bangers ready for both dancefloors and bedrooms. Wizkid’s back-and-forth with H.E.R on ‘Smile’ is made for sunny outdoor slow dances. The plaintive ‘No Stress’ and lithe dance tune ‘True Love’ follow that same pattern, the former an anthem for sleeping around and the latter for being committed to someone long-term.
Interestingly, ‘Grace’ concludes the project with similar lyrical undertones and it appears Wizkid is stressing from beginning to the end that despite obstacles, he will continue to run his race.
There’s a distinct thread throughout the tracks which allow for seamlessness on the project. This sometimes blends so well, the album displays a maturity in Wizkid and his growth can be heard as he mixes easy listening and warm upbeat tempos across his fourth studio album. Wizkid has one of the largest fan bases in Nigeria and beyond; and they constantly support Starboy’s music. Since the release of this album, many have taken to social media to express their thoughts regarding the album and to drop their favourite song from the album.
MIL is a carefully articulated work of art. Wizkid boldly tells everyone that the wait was totally worth it. The tracks are beautifully written and recorded, there was absolutely no rush and you feel that as you seamlessly listen from one song to the other. Every track on the MIL album is trending and rising in the world music charts. If Wizkid’s 14 tracks are currently dominating Nigeria’s Top 100 Music billboard on iTunes, I am one of those responsible – refreshing more than a dozen times, just like every other fan out there before finally downloading the album. Wizkid features: Burna Boy, Skepta, Damian Marley, H.E.R, Tay Iwar, Projexx, Ella Mai, Tems, and Terri. With major production from P2J.

2020 has been a historic year in many ways. Only a few days after Nigeria celebrated its 60th independence anniversary from colonial rule, a spate of protests erupted across the country, which has crossed international borders, as Nigerians home and abroad call for the disbandment of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) unit of the police force and an end to police brutality.
The #EndSARS protest is the largest revolution the country has seen, but it is also just an unpleasant addition to an already odd year. Below are ten things that happened before the #EndSARS protest, and 2020 at a glimpse.
Keke/Okada Ban – the Lagos state government in February, announced the ban of commercial operation of okada and keke along several major roads in Lagos. His announcement left several thousand cyclists jobless, and the majority of the Lagos state population stranded. Okadas and kekes being the major and cheapest means of transportation within the state.
Coronavirus – the COVID-19 pandemic took the world by surprise and by February 27, Nigeria recorded its first Coronavirus case. There have been over 60,000 confirmed cases of the virus in Nigeria and over one thousand deaths recorded.
Abule Ado Explosions – on an early Sunday morning in March, residents of Abule Ado, in Festac, woke up to noise from an explosion as a tanker crashed into a building housing gas cylinders. The explosion took the lives of over 20 people and destroyed over 130 buildings.
Lockdown – as the spread of the Coronavirus reached pandemic status, countries began locking down their borders and cities to curb the spread even as scientists worked round the clock to understand the virus and create a vaccine. On Tuesday, March 31st, President Buhari announced a 14 day lockdown of Lagos and Ogun states and the Federal Capital Territory.
Don’t Rush Challenge – out of the despair that 2020 has brought, the Don’t Rush challenge was a positive time in the lockdown. It was a moment of genuine relaxation and joy, as social media users put their spin on the fun viral challenge.
Black Lives Matter – in May, the video of George Floyd, pressed on the floor, calling out for his mother, while a police officer kneeled on his neck till he died went viral on social media. The video signalled the Black Lives Matter protests that spread through cities in the United States of America calling for an end to systemic racism and police brutality against Black people in America.
Justice For Uwa – in June, a rash of rape and gender-based violence hit the news. The repeated cases finally hit breaking point with the Nigerian masses especially women and soon the #JusticeForUwa hashtag spread across social media calling for these rape cases to be addressed.
Hush Puppi’s Arrest – in June, news of the arrest of Hush Puppi and his associates by the Dubai police force on charges of fraud hit the airwaves. The arrest made for sensational news as Hush Puppi is a high profile personality in Nigeria, popular for constantly flaunting his lavish lifestyle on social media.
Big Brother Naija Lockdown– in August, what would be the biggest season of Big Brother Naija yet began airing. The lockdown led to the largest audience tune in the reality show had ever recorded. While it aired, Nigerian youths, particularly on social media, banded, collaborated and showed support for their favourite housemates.
EndSARS– On Saturday 3 October 2020, a video showing a SARS official shooting a young man at Ughelli, Delta State went viral on social media. The video sparked outrage against the common practice of police brutality in Nigeria, and only a week after, the #EndSARS protest began.

Before Instagram made celebrities out of every one with a curated Instagram feed and the slightest fashion sense, there were a group of women who ruled the fashion scene in Lagos with so much flair and flamboyance that it didn’t matter whether you’re in Benue, or like this writer, you’re tucked in in a tiny town in Abia State that is seemingly removed from the rest of the world, you just knew about them. These were the real “OGs before IG”. They didn’t need social media for us to keep up with their extravagant and incredibly stylish lifestyles.
For anyone who only recently started keeping tabs on the Nigerian fashion scene, the first thing that comes to mind when you hear the name, “Anumudu” is Ozinna, or Zina as most people call her. The fashion girl and owner of The Style Concierge is a sort of household name when it comes to fashion. But the real Anumudu fashion girl is her mother, Nkiru. There wasn’t a fashion or events magazine in the country in the 90’s and early 2000’s that didn’t have Nkiru Anumudu’s photo in its pages regularly. It wasn’t a high society event, if the billionaire wife and her Over-The-Top style weren’t in attendance. Always decked out head to toe in straight-out-of-the-runway designer pieces. As far as fashion goes in Nigeria, Nkiru popularised the logomania trend. Mrs Anumudu spent (and still does) lavishly on her wardrobe and she wants you to know it.
Helen was crowned Miss Nigeria in 1979 when the pageant which was the only one at the time was still fiercely competitive. Decades after she won the highly coveted title and represented Nigeria in the Miss World competition, the lawyer and beauty queen remained as relevant on the social scenes as ever. From magazine covers to high profile events, her understated yet very elegant style was the envy of many. Where Nkiru’s style was very maximalist, Helen’s was the exact opposite. She exuded wealth without ever appearing like she was trying too hard. It all came so natural to her.
There has perhaps never been a more covered beauty queen in Nigeria than Nike Oshinowo. Most beauty queens barely make the news for the duration of their tenure. The more lucky ones manage to sustain their newsworthiness for one or two years after their reign, but not Nike. From the moment she was crowned the Most Beautiful Girl In Nigeria in 1990 to the mid 2000’s, the now 54-year-old was always in the news for one reason or the other, but for most especially her style which for a large part remains unrivaled. Nike was the It Girl. She was the girl every other girl wanted to look like and every man wanted to have on their arms.
Cosmetic surgery might be slowly finding a home among the celebrities and regular women in Nigeria, and we have Modupe to thank for it. Years ago, when it was still considered a taboo for one to alter their body unnaturally, Modupe openly owned up to getting work done and even went on to set up her own body enhancement clinic. This light-skinned beauty was a permanent fixture in the social circles in the early 2000’s for very obvious reasons.
Grace is the quintessential society woman. In her days as Executive Director of Marketing at NTA, the Edo-born lawyer was arguably more photographed than the presenters whose faces graced people’s TV screens on a daily basis. With friends in high places, a killer dress sense, and money of her own, Grace was a regular on red carpets at the classiest events.
A couple of high profile relationships and a clothing brand patronised by First ladies and their other affluent friends ensured that this Ghanaian-born beauty, fondly called Sisi Abba’ was always in the news. The veteran fashion designer and style icon’s glamorous take on modest fashion stood her out among her peers. If there was anything people discussed more than Sisi Abba’s style, it was her love life – a love affair with the son of Chief Obafemi Awolowo, Segun Awolowo which produced her only child; a short-lived marriage to Lagun Adesanya and then another marriage to billionaire businessman Alhaji Wahab Iyanda Folawiyo. This woman has lived a full life!
Before she died in 2012, designer Oluremi Osholake of Remi Lagos was one of the biggest fashion designers out of Nigeria, showcasing in major fashion capitals of the world. Her label boasted of a long clientele list made up of the classiest and wealthiest women from across Nigeria and beyond. Never one to miss a party, Remi’s signature all-black look was one to always look out for at events and in the pages of lifestyle magazines.

As the END SARS protests kicked off in Lagos and spread all over Nigeria and the rest of the world, a few things stood out for me.
Here are five things I learnt as a young Nigerian working in media, living in Lagos, who actively participated in protesting, and providing media support.
I have never seen such outpouring of love for one another. People took it upon themselves to help during the protests in various ways, from feeding each other to using their skills to educate others. Even the diaspora showed immense support through donations to those at home. It shows that before we are of a religion or a tribe, we are all human and Nigerians first.
If there is anything the ‘pressing phone’ generation has shown, it’s that their phones are indeed powerful. Through social media, we were able to document the END SARS movement and draw the attention of the world to Nigeria. The #ENDSARS hashtag related tweets accumulated over 29m posts on Twitter in the month of October and it remains the driving tool to demand accountability from the Nigerian government.
The protests tested the strength and capacity of everyone. People were coming out every day for 13 days in Lagos and other states in Nigeria. I personally stood at a protest for over three hours and all I could think of was, “Those who have spent days and nights here must be superhuman”. They made it work despite work, family engagements and so on.
Even with the physical protests in Nigeria on hold, Nigerians are still going strong online to make sure that justice is served. And those in saner countries are still taking to the streets. Just look at that!
Believe me when I say there are Nigerians EVERYWHERE. Pictures and footage of END SARS protest taking place in India, UK, the US to Germany. And all of them came out in their numbers to show solidarity, calling for an end to police brutality and extrajudicial killings in Nigeria.
Lastly and most importantly, the average Nigerian is not a criminal. We are creatives, thinkers, doers and achievers. For too long we have been victims of a terrible system that has been created by those in governance who have allowed their greed to empty this nation of what could have benefitted the millions of people living within its borders. We are young, hardworking, driven, and ambitious. We’ve done a lot to make the country a better place. And we can still do more if our only government would stop killing us.

Many didn’t know that Afrojuju maestro Sir Shina Peters squatted with a prostitute in a motel room in Oshodi, Lagos before his rise to stardom as one of Nigeria’s entertainment legends.
His hit albums Ace in 1989 and Shinamania in 1990 easily won the hearts of many, but it wasn’t an easy ride for SSP. This informed his reason for saying “I don’t know who can survive what I have been through in life” in a 2018 interview in celebration of his 60th birthday.
He revealed in 2018 that as a young boy he left his parents’ ‘face-me-I-face-you’ one-room apartment on 6, McCarthy Lane, located in the ever-busy Oshodi market in Lagos, he had nowhere to go and had to squat with a prostitute in a motel.
His reason for leaving home was his parents’ refusal to allow him to dump school to become a musician. For them, only a wayward child would abandon school for music. He later proved them wrong.
He said:
“I woke up at 2 a.m one day and I told them (my parents) I was not going to school; that all I wanted to do was play music. But because of my decision not to go to school, my parents woke up everybody in the house that night including the landlord. The landlord then said, ‘If you are not going to school, that means you have been cursed from outside and we wouldn’t want you to influence the other children’.
He added:
“When I left home, I went to Temiogbe Motel, Oshodi. I can remember, a prostitute then called me and I was living with her. She would lay her wrapper on the floor for me to sleep on. For weeks, I was with her. So, it happened that the woman kept her money under the pillow but she forgot it was under the pillow and she now said I took the money.”
Peters would later become a house boy to legendary singer turned pastor, Chief Ebenezer Obey.
“I also served as a house boy to Ebenezer Obey. Things changed for the better for me when I met Ebenezer Obey. I used to go to his place to clean his clothes and shoes. Whenever he was not at home, I would play his guitar,”
he said.
He thereafter joined the band of another singer General Prince Adekunle where he became more active, from there he formed a partnership with Segun Adewale (another singer who left his parents’ home in Osogbo, Osun State for Lagos because his parents didn’t want him to become a musician). The duo formed Shina Adewale and the Superstars International. They eventually went solo in 1980 to set up their separate bands. Following their separation, Peters created a brand of music he called Afro juju.
Like the words of Tai Solarin in his January 1, 1964 article, the road was very rough for SSP, but through steadfastness and dedication to his dream, Peters became a global brand and ruled Nigeria’s entertainment world for close to two decades through his new brand of music he dubbed Afrojuju, a fusion of Juju and Afrobeat.
His Afrojuju brand is premised on fast percussion beat with the use of electric keyboard, saxophone and guitar. Afrojuju has taken him to several countries across the world and won him multiple awards.

After his secondary school education, Tunde Kelani was just a photographers apprentice, learning the ropes in the hopes of one day becoming a great photographer himself. But that was not the course his life would take. He would eventually create some of the greatest films Nigeria has ever seen and totally change the way films are made in Nigeria. So how did he go from that photographer’s apprentice to a Nollywood icon whose films are revered decades later?
Though he was born in Lagos on February 26, 1948, Tunde Kelani didn’t grow up in Lagos. At the age of 5, he was sent to live with his grandparents in the ancient city of Abeokuta. His grandfather was the ‘Balogun of Ijaiye Kukudi’, which meant Tunde had access to the different sides of Yoruba culture and worldview. This would later reflect in his most celebrated works. He attended the Oke-Ona Primary School, Ikija, Abeokuta, then the Abeokuta Grammar school for his secondary education.
After training as a photographer, Tunde Kelani went on to train as a cameraman at the first TV station in Nigeria, Western Nigeria Television. The quest for knowledge of moviemaking didn’t end there as he also completed a diploma in the Art and Technique of Filmmaking at the London Film School. While in London, Tunde worked for the BBC and Reuters, covering the Ethiopian drought and travelling to Zimbabwe thrice to cover the nation’s independence.
Tunde Kelani returned to Nigeria after locking down his London Film School diploma and co-produced his first movie, ‘The Dilemma of Reverend Father Michael’ with Adebayo Faleti, also a Nollywood icon and the first ever Yoruba news anchor in Nigeria. The screenplay for the film was done by Lola Fani-Kayode, the TV producer known for creating the classic TV series, Mirror in the Sun.
What followed was a series of cinematography gigs on some 16mm feature films including: Anikura; Ogun Ajaye; Iya Ni Wura; Taxi Driver; Iwa and Fopomoyo. By 1990, Tunde Kelani was the assistant director and also acted in the first American movie to be shot in Nigeria titled ‘Mister Johnson’ – an adaptation of the 1939 novel by Joyce Cary. Pierce Brosnan and Maynard Eziashi starred in the film. At this point, his reputation was growing fast but his best work was yet to come.
In 1992 he founded the iconic Mainframe Film and Television Productions company to promote the Nigerian culture and beliefs through high-quality movies. He wanted to produce his own films instead of just providing technical support for others. Tunde also had a soft spot for both English and Yoruba literature and his adaptations of books and plays for film are the core of Kelani’s filmmaking practice. Through Mainframe, he has produced movies such as Ti Oluwa Nile, Ayo Ni Mo Fe, Koseegbe, Oleku, Thunderbolt (Magun), Saworoide, Agogo Eewo, The Campus Queen, Abeni, Narrow Path, Arugba and Maami. A couple of these films are classic Nigerian films as well as fantastic film adaptations of various books.
These movies would go on to define the highest standards of quality for Nigerian films. At the time, filmmakers weren’t making well-scripted, high quality movies and film production was very rudimentary. Tunde Kelani (and others like Tade Ogidan) insisted on making films with better direction and better stories, going on to influence works like Irapada (2006), The Amazing Grace (2006) and The Figurine (2009) by producer and director Kunle Afolayan. The latter is the break out movie that started the current, cinema-debuting Nollywood era.
These days, Tunde Kelani doubles as a fellow at the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta, Ogun State. In 2019, he was elected by the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences (aka The Oscars) to vote in the Directors Category at future awards. He has won multiple awards and mentored several producers and directors in the Nigeria film industry. He is married with three children.

Fans of the WWE can gear up for another thrilling week of action on SuperSport, with live airings of the NXT, SmackDown and Raw shows running from Thursday 5 to Tuesday 10 November 2020.
The action begins on the morning of Thursday 5 November with WWE NXT Episode 589. Johnny Gargano has become the first-ever two-time North American champion, and is relishing his role as a belt-holder.
“My destiny has been fulfilled,” said Gargano. “I yelled it from the treetops. I am the first two time North American champion.”
However, his victory at Halloween Havoc was somewhat soured after his wife, Candice LeRae, was unable to take the NXT Women’s title from Io Shirai. Yet the pair will inevitably continue their comedy capers when NXT continues this week.
Saturday 7 November brings Episode 1107 of WWE SmackDown. After months of pursuit, Sasha Banks finally overcame her former best friend turned heated rival Bayley and captured her first SmackDown Women’s Championship in a gruelling Hell in a Cell Match to end Bayley’s year-long reign.
But just when “The Boss of the Cell” turned her attention to her upcoming Champion vs. Champion Match against Raw Women’s Champion Asuka at Survivor Series, Bayley interrupted and challenged Banks to a SmackDown Women’s Championship Rematch on this week’s SmackDown. It was a challenge Banks wasted little time accepting.
Tuesday 10 November will feature Episode 1433 of WWE Raw. With former WWE champion Drew McIntrye having brought ‘The Fiend’ into the title picture alongside belt holder Randy Orton, the tension will begin to ratchet up ahead of the next Pay-Per-View special, Survivor Series, later this month.
That event will also feature a showdown between two other title holders, WWE United States champion Bobby Lashley and WWE Intercontinental champion Sami Zayn. MVP, the head of ‘The Hurt Business’ has promised that Lashley will claim victory at that match.
“There’s no betting line on ‘win’ or ‘loss’ for this match,” explained MVP. “It’s only a case of how long… 30 seconds, 40 seconds, a minute. One minute is the over-under. You can bet on the over, you can bet on the under…. I strongly suggest the under.”

Liposuction and fat transfer are quickly becoming two of the most popular plastic surgery procedures in Nigeria. People are constantly trying to alter their bodies to look ‘perfect’.
Celebrities like Toke Makinwa and Tonto Dikeh have been very open about their surgeries. Tonto in an interview told BBC Pidgin, “ Maybe I’ll be going for my third one. I want to do my breasts and touch up my belly as well.”
While the new look from these procedures is usually beautiful, there are a few things to consider before deciding to take the plunge. We have come up with the ultimate guide to deciding whether or not you want a Lipo Fat Transfer surgery.
Liposuction
It’s a surgical procedure used to reduce body fat in certain areas of the body. It breaks up the fat in parts of the body and sucks it up. It can also be called lipoplasty, liposculpture suction, lipectomy, and body contouring. It involves making incisions in the skin and then using a tube to remove fat from the body. The incisions are then closed up with stitches.
Dr Aranmolate popularly known as Dr Laser says that although women are the major users of cosmetic surgery, men tend to prefer liposuction as their choice of cosmetic surgery. He says, “For a lot of men, they do more liposuction – abdominal liposuction because some of them have a lot of fat in their abdomen. When they have big breasts, they also come to take out the breast tissues so it can look flat.”
Benefits of Liposuction
1. It can be used to change and enhance body shape.
2. It gives subtle changes to the body instead of drastic change.
3. The recovery time is relatively shorter.
4. It can be used to fix certain medical conditions like Lymphedema, Lipomas, Gynecomastia and Lipodystrophy syndrome.
Side Effects of Liposuction
1. There may be contour irregularities where the skin appears bumpy due to uneven fat removal or poor skin elasticity that may be permanent.
2. It is possible to feel numbness in the affected area or experience nerve irritation.
3. You can get skin irritations or puncture an internal organ with the needle used for the surgery.
4. Fat can get into the blood vessels and block circulation to the lungs and brain which is life-threatening.
5. Changes in body fluid during the procedure can cause fluid to accumulate in the lungs or cause kidney or heart problems.
Fat Transfer
It is a cosmetic surgery done to move fat from one part of the body to another. They are also called fat grafting or lipo modelling. The purpose is to remove fat from a part of the body with excess part to another part of the body so as to smoothen or increase it. Fat transfers can be done to the face, breasts and butts. When they are done to the butt, it is called a ‘Brazillian butt lift’. This is the most popular one amongst ladies in Nigeria.
Benefits of Fat Transfer
1. It helps to improve the general body shape.
2. It can boost confidence and improve self-esteem.
3. It helps to fix shapelessness and sagging caused by ageing.
4. Fat transfers like the Brazillian Butt give more natural results and have lower risks of infections.
Side Effects of Fat Transfer
1. You may need more than one procedure as the body reabsorbs some of the fat after it has been transferred to the new part.
2. There may be collections of blood under the skin that would need additional surgery to fix.
3. You may experience the death of some of the fat tissues transferred and this would cause firmness within the skin, hard lumps and pain.
4. A more deadly side effect is a ‘fat embolism’ where some of the transferred fat gets in the bloodstream and causes life-threatening illnesses like stroke, meningitis, blindness and even death.
How Much Would It Cost?
Liposuction in Nigeria alone costs 800,000 Naira to 1.5 million Naira. On the other hand, fat transfer costs between 2 million Naira and 8 million Naira. However, prices vary based on size and areas of liposuction and fat transfer.
Dr Laser of Grandville Medical and Laser said they sometimes reduce the prices of procedures. He said, “At intervals, what we tend to do is that we try to reduce the price of some of the procedures we do. Just to encourage many people because it’s still part of the many ways to tell people that these things are actually possible in Nigeria.”
Where Can You Get It Done
There are different centres and hospitals where liposuction, fat transfer and other forms of plastic surgery can be done in Lagos and Abuja.
Conclusion
People decide to get liposuction or fat transfer for personal reasons. Their results can help you feel better about yourself and that is a great reason to embark on this journey. However, before you decide what you do, make sure your health is in a perfect place and that you have a good doctor. When you finally get your desired look, flaunt, embrace it and don’t be embarrassed to celebrate it.
