Nigerians get even more local and international content with three popular local entertainment and news channels now available on streaming service Showmax, 24 hours a day.

African streaming service Showmax is adding even more local content for Nigerian subscribers with a selection of local live channels now available in its streaming catalogue that include Channels TV, NTAi and SilverbirdTV.

The live streams will be available to Showmax and Showmax Pro subscribers, including the mobile plans, and will be available on web and mobile devices, as well as select Samsung and LG Smart TVs. This is in addition to Showmax’s unique combination of African content, first and exclusive international series, the best kids’ shows, and, on Showmax Pro, live sport from SuperSport.

Showmax already streams some of the most talked-about Nigerian series including Enakhe and Riona, new dating show Shoot Your Shot, and Akin Omotoso’s new movie The Ghost and the House of Truth that comes first to Showmax in November.

Showmax is also home to international series that aren’t available anywhere else to binge-watch, with award-winning titles like 2020 Emmy winners Watchmen and Succession, hit HBO series like Game of Thrones and Insecure as well as blockbuster movies like Cold Pursuit, Robin Hood and Hunter Killer. Showmax also has an extensive catalogue of first on Showmax series including Siren, the addictively dark mermaid series, thrilling spy drama Condor and action-packed special-ops series Strike Back.

With a local-first approach, everything about Showmax – the content, apps, pricing, packages and partnerships – is tailored to African audiences. Speaking about the development, Yolisa Phahle, CEO of MultiChoice’s Connected Video, said: “We’re constantly working on new ways to improve the Showmax experience for our subscribers. Whether it’s enabling Verve card payments or daily episodes of Africa Magic favourites like Tinsel, My Flatmates and The Johnsons, our local-first approach keeps our Nigerian subscribers top of mind. These additional live streams are another way that Showmax is changing the game in streaming in Africa.”

The addition of the live channels follows the launch of Showmax Pro, which features all Premier League, Serie A and La Liga matches, as well as other live sport events from SuperSport – something no other streaming service on the continent is offering. Both Showmax and Showmax Pro are available on a mobile plan that is half the price and available to stream on mobile devices.

Subscribe to Showmax for N2900 per month or choose the mobile plan and watch on a single mobile device for N1450. The Showmax Pro subscription is N6300 per month, and the mobile version of Showmax Pro is N3200 per month. Go to www.showmax for more information.

After initially receiving over 11,000 audition entries from around Nigeria, MTN Y’ello Star officially opened on Saturday, November 7, with 40 contestants for the national sing-off, out of which only 14 will make the final selection. The contestants either got a “Yes”, a “No”, or a “Maybe” from the judges.

During the national sing off, only 7 contestants got definite “Yeses” from the judges, which meant they had immediately made it to the finals. This left 7 slots to be filled, and by Saturday, November 14, the 12 contestants who had gotten “Maybes” from the judges, had a second chance to impress them and make it to the finals. Only 7 out of these 12 were eventually chosen.

The 12 contestants were paired in twos to face off each other. Six teams in total. The contestants that impressed the judges went through the yellow door into the final, while it was the end of the Y’ello star road for the others.

Let’s see how they did.

Rakael and Innocent

Rakael and Innocent performing

These two super talented contestants faced off in an exciting performance of a mash up Shakira’s “Waka Waka”, Burna Boy’s “Dangote”, Tiwa Savage’s “Ole”, Davido’s “If” and several other great selections. This was a fierce round with both contestants not giving an inch away.

In spite of their efforts, the judges were not greatly impressed by the pair. They both got Nos from the judges.

Next up were Caesar and Rael – this was a slower medley of songs like, Justin Bieber’s “Sorry”, Sam Smith’s “I’m Not The Only One”, Whitney Houston’s “I Will Always Love You”. This pair had great energy and synergy and both got a Yes from the judges that saw them in the finals.

Caesar and Rael

Gideon and IBK made up the third set. They had a mashup of hits like Rihanna’s “Diamonds”, Maroon 5’s “Memories”, Wizkid’s “Ayo”, Beyonce’s “Brown Skin Girl”, among others. IBK got a No, but Gideon got a Yes and moved to the finals.

Gideon and IBK performing

Things get even more heated by the fourth team with Fayfay Diamond and Uche facing off to Wizkid’s “Energy”, Adele’s “Rolling In The Deep”, John Legend’s “Ordinary People”. Fayfay impressed the judges and got a slot in the finals, Uche went home.

Fayfay Diamond and Uche

Uzezi and Jesse Drums came up next and this duo left it all on the stage with their synergy, powerful voices and amazing performance. Performing Adele’s “Rollin in the Deep”, Burna Boy’s “Dangote”, Bill Withers’ “Lean On Me”. And from the smiles on their faces, the judges definitely enjoyed the performance. Uzezi got a yes.

Uzezi and Jesse Drums

And in a surprising move, the judges used their veto power, to get Jesse Drums to the finals. The initial number of contestants expected to move to the finals were 13. However, the judges called that the votes between Jesse Drums and Gideon were too close to call and decided to let them both to the finals, bringing the total number of finalists, to 14.

Banky W explaining the judge’s inspiration, reiterated that MTN Y’ello Star was not just about who had the highest score or who was the best singer, but rather, its focus was on empowering the contestants.

Jesse, though visually impaired, did not allow this to derail him from trying to actualize his dreams. He had come all the way from the North, to compete at the nationals and now had a shot at the finals. For these reasons and his pure energy, the judges let him into the finals.

The seven contestants that made it to the finals, out of the initial 12 were, David Garland, Gideon, Fayfay Diamond, Uzezi, Jesse Drums, Caesar and Rael. Next up, was the Opening Gala.

Adesuwa Etomi-Wellington is well known for her acting, but she may be diversifying her portfolio soon.

Adesuwa Etomi

Her husband, Banky W who’s himself an award-winning singer and star-maker told Netng she plans to release some music soon. He made this revelation during a Netng interview with MTN Y’ello Star judges and hosts.

The 39-year-old, joined by fellow judge, Omawumi and Y’ello Star hosts, Tobi Bakre and Hilda Bacci, says Adesuwa is his only music client right now.

He said, ‘We do work with a lot of talents, we do work with talents in entertainment, music, acting, on-air personalities. We manage Ebuka and Mike from Big Brother. But as far as music goes, in terms of working on somebody’s album, I’m working on my album and my wife’s EP. Susu is the only artiste right now that I’m focusing on.’

Adesuwa Etomi

This will be Adesuwa Etomi’s first musical body of work and Banky W’s fifth studio album. The couple has already dominated the Nollywood scene together, appearing side by side in the two highest-grossing Nollywood films of all time, ‘Wedding Party 1 and 2’.  They are now set to take on the music industry together.

Adesuwa’s foray into music will not come as such a surprise to true fans of the actress as she has been spotted many times leading ministrations in her church choir. She also featured on one of Banky W’s songs, ‘Watchu Doing Tonight’ in 2018. She has a diploma in “physical theatre, musical theatre and performing arts” from City College Coventry. She’s already spent years studying music and will now put all her talent and skills into practice.

Adesuwa Etomi

Banky W, on the other hand, is an award-winning producer and artiste. He executive produced Wizkid’s highly-acclaimed debut album, ‘Superstar’, and the follow-up album, ‘Ayo’. He is also the executive producer of the award-winning EME Compilation album, ‘Empire State of Mind’. He will soon get to add Adesuwa’s EP to his list of production credits.

The power couple would both have a lot to prove whenever their projects come out and luckily, they both have the talent and expertise to create two beautiful works of art, and we can’t wait to hear it!

The MTN Y’ello Star music talent and capacity building show has begun with the most exquisite set of judges. Its pick of Banky W, Omawumi and Malik Yusef makes it clear that excellence is the standard.

Judges

Banky W, Omawumi, and Malik Yusef each have interesting unique components that when mixed could create the most efficient musician the world has ever seen. From great business acumen, enviable voice control, and songwriting skills honed over years of experience, the trio have it on lockdown.

Judges

Olubankole Wellington, aka Banky W, has years of experience in the music business and in the actual act of creating music. He started attending and winning music competitions while he was in college and finally began his career after he got his degree. He has over a decade and a half of experience as an artiste and in the music business. Banky’s solo music catalogue consists of an impressive discography spanning over a decade as one of Africa’s most relevant, successful and in-demand musicians. His discography featuring projects like ‘Undeniable: The EP’, ‘Back In The Building’, ‘Mr. Capable’, ‘The W Experience’, ‘R&BW’, ‘Songs About U’ is stellar.

As a music businessman, Banky has launched the careers of some of the biggest stars in the country, including Grammy-nominated Wizkid; Skales, Niyola, and Shaydee. He was also highly influential in the discovery, introduction and development of the careers of producer, Masterkraft, and in-house Sound Engineer, Suka Sounds. He served as the Executive Producer and Lead A&R for Wizkid’s 2011 highly acclaimed debut album, ‘Superstar’, Wizkid’s 2014 follow up album, ‘Ayo’, and the hit-filled Label compilation CD, ‘Empire Mates State of Mind’.

Throughout his career, Banky W has won numerous awards including three Headies awards for ‘Best Male Vocal Performance’ in 2008, and ‘R&B Single of the Year’ in 2010 and 2013. Some of his other awards include the 2010 Soundcity Music Video Awards ‘Best Male Music Video’ and ‘Best R&B Singer’, the 2011 Channel O Music Video Awards ‘Most Gifted R&B Male Video’, the 2011 Future Awards ‘Musician of The Year’, and more. He is the perfect person to help launch someone’s career and take them from zero to hero.

Judges

Omawumi is probably the best judge any contestant on a talent show could hope for. She understands the struggle they are facing as she also got her start in the music industry on another music talent show, West African Idols. Even though she didn’t win, emerging as the first runner up, she has gone on to have an illustrious career. The 38-year-old  has thrived and maintained consistency in the industry for over a decade and has released four critically acclaimed studio albums.

Omawumi is famed for the amazing voice that has earned her two Headies for ‘Best Female Vocal Performance’, first in 2009 and then in 2018. Her foray into acting and production helps her to understand theatrics. She can teach participants of the show how to add some drama and flair to their performances, which will only make them more entertaining. If there was ever a person who could push, empathize and teach MTN Y’ello Star contestants to be better musicians, even outside the confines of the show, it would be Omawumi.

Judges

Malik Yusef is the icing on the cake. There is not a single soul trying to break into the music industry, that would not want to learn from a six-time Grammy award-winning artiste. He is the holy grail of music writing, and most beginners can not do any better than him. He rose out of Chicago’s south side to become a 24x Grammy award-nominee and 7x ASCAP award-winner for both pop and R&B. His other credits include Emmy, Peabody, and the Tony awards.

Malik co-wrote ‘Sandcastles’ on Beyonce’s album Lemonade. He has featured on every Kanye West album since his career inception except on the album, Jesus is King. And as one of Kanye West’s most consistent collaborators, he has enjoyed numerous Platinum and Billboard Successes. His roster of artistes he has written for includes, Jay Z, Drake, Katy Perry, Common, Jennifer Hudson, Rihanna, and Adam Levine, to name a few. Learning how to write music and even possibly record a song written by the award-winning songwriter is an honour. It puts you in a class of super exclusive talents from across the world and opens doors many can only ever dream of.

Banky W, Omawumi and Malik Yusef make a heady cocktail mix of music excellence. Their innovation, talent, drive, and experience is just what a burgeoning act needs to help push them to achieve greatness. This season of MTN Y’ello Star is sure to be filled with learnings for the contestants, and interesting and insightful comments from the judges that the viewers can learn from.

Nigeria’s first-ever feature-length animation movie produced by Hot Ticket Productions, LadyBuckit and The Motley Mopsters (LBMM) will hit cinemas in December this year. A truly historic moment.

feature-length animation movie
L-R: Kalu Ikeagwu, Bimbo Akintola, and Patrick Doyle.

LBMM is the story of a brilliant, self-absorbed, precocious Bukky, who on a journey of self-discovery, finds herself in wildly unfamiliar territory, and transforms into a bucket. She encounters a band of highly unusual characters, the Motley Mopsters, who change the course of her destiny and sweep her up in a tide of friendship and excitement. The movie is set in Oloibiri, a small town in Bayelsa, Nigeria where crude oil was first discovered in commercial quantities in the 1950s.

LBMM combines the skill and experience of veterans with the fresh talent of young minds. Voices in this historic work of art include Bimbo Akintola, Patrick Doyle, Kalu Ikeagwu, Kelechi Udegbe, Awazi Angbalaga, Jessica Edwards, David Edwards and several supporting cast.

Patrick Doyle, Bimbo Akintola, and Kalu Ikeagwu have been in the movies for a long time, and they’ve cemented their place as ace actors, appearing in numerous films. Patrick Doyle voices Udume Bozimo, father of Bukky Bozimo who later transforms into Ladybuckit. Bimbo Akintola joins him as his wife and mother of Bukky, as Iyabo Bozimo. Kalu Ikeagwu plays the role of Mr Edwin, a mysterious and poor man who plays a vital role in changing Bukky and subsequently, Ladybuckit’s destiny.

The other members of the Motley Mopsters crew include Ladybuckit and Bukky Bozimo, played by Jessica Edwards; Mopps, played by Casey Edema; Pantylegs played by Awazi Angbalaga; Cupsticks, played by Francis Sule; Slipperhead played by Simi Hassan; and Tam played by David Edwards.

In light of how chaotic 2020 has been, LBMM could not be coming at a better time. It provides an opportunity for families to bond over a truly positive, hilarious and fun family movie. The animation is a gentle reminder to Nigerians to laugh, hope and dream again.

Blessing Amidu, CEO/Founder of Hot Ticket Productions and the Executive Producer and Producer of the film, emphasised the need for a family-focused movie to end a tough year. She says, ‘Families have had to deal with a lot this year: from a global pandemic to civil unrest and economic challenges. As we approach the end of the year, it was important to provide some succour and means of escape and release, for children and the entire family. We strongly believe that Entertainment is a powerful tool for this.’

Asides from being the first feature-length animated movie produced in Nigeria by Nigerians, with strictly Nigerian characters, LBMM is also accompanied by a 14-track original album. Music producer and songwriter, Clement ‘DJ Klem’ Kponu and film composer, Ava Momoh produced the album.

Ladybuckit and the Motley Mopsters will hit cinemas (Nigeria and internationally) on Friday, December 11, and we can’t wait to see it!

The action begins on the morning of Thursday 19 November with WWE NXT Episode 591. NXT Women’s Champion Io Shirai has called out Rhea Ripley, sparking a rivalry that could rock the division to its core.

“Everyone wants to know what is next for Io Shirai. To show this is my NXT, there is one more challenge I must face,” said Shirai. “Rhea Ripley. After all I’ve been through with Rhea, I want to face her, one on one, for the NXT Women’s Championship. Rhea, I’m not afraid of nightmares.”

Saturday 21 November brings Episode 1109 of WWE SmackDown. Rey Mysterio hopes to have put an end to his rivalry with Seth Rollins after a brutal no-holds-barred match between the pair at last week’s SmackDown.

“I have so many mixed emotions, I don’t even know where to start,” said Rey Mysterio. “I’ve been through so much in the past eight months that it’s hard to even put things together. But the most important thing is we’ve stayed solid as a family.”

Tuesday 24 November will feature Episode 1435 of WWE Raw. Alex Bliss’ relationship with The Fiend continues to deepen, though her best friend, Nikki Cross, tried to talk her back from the brink.

“Lexy, I’m so sorry that I wasn’t there when you needed me, but I’m here now, okay? I know you’re having fun now, but The Fiend – Bray Wyatt – he’s pure evil. Lexy, it’s time to make a choice, okay? It’s time to walk away. You need to choose: me or him,” pleaded Cross.

However, Bliss did not respond in the manner Cross would have been hoping for: “Okay, I choose… him!”

SuperSport is your #HomeOfFootball and the ultimate destination for lovers of ‘The Beautiful Game’.

The pick of Premier League matches this weekend sees Tottenham Hotspur host Manchester City in London on the evening of Saturday 21 November, with the Lilywhites and manager Jose Mourinho looking to make a statement of intent.

Spurs have been one of the most impressive teams on show early in this season and the potency of their attack – which features Harry Kane, Son Heung-min and the returning Gareth Bale – marks them out as a genuine threat.

“It’s very early on but our motivation is clear. For us, we’re going into every game to try and win. We know that’s not possible but that’s our ambition. We’re going into every game, no matter the competition believing we can win,” said the versatile Eric Dier, who noted how manager Jose Mourinho has changed their mindset.

“That’s a great feeling and it’s a great feeling to have. That’s the objective and the manager sets that tone from above. It’s very early on but we’re focusing game by game and trying to win every game we play.”

Spurs also showed their muscle against Man City last season, taking four points off Pep Guardiola’s men by drawing 2-2 at the Etihad Stadium in August 2019 before a 2-0 win in the return game in the capital in February 2020 – featuring goals from Son and Steven Bergwijn.

Elsewhere in England’s top flight this round, Chelsea will fancy their chances of three points on the road when they visit Newcastle United; Manchester United will be desperate to claim a home win in the Premier League when they welcome West Bromwich Albion to Old Trafford; and Liverpool host Leicester City in a potential thriller at Anfield.

There will also be an intriguing clash between Leeds United and Arsenal, with Mikel Arteta looking to test out his wits against the tactical nous of Marcelo Bielsa in what should be a match of incredible intensity at Elland Road.

No rival can compete with SuperSport’s coverage. Our viewers on DStv and GOtv can see all their favourite stars from the African continent dominating Premier League pitches across England.

‘A Day In The Live’: Five Things Wizkid Told Julie Adenuga On Youtube Gig

In typical Wizkid fashion, last night’s YouTube concert was more than just an artiste singing a couple of songs. It was a three-hour-plus video of Wizkid’s life, all the activities that happen in it before any concert, and an interview with BBC Radio 1 Xtra. He ended the video with a 50-minute live band performance. London-based Nigerian OAP, Julie Adenuga hosted this rare glimpse into the father of three’s life.

A Day In The Live

In watching ‘A Day in The Live’ of Wizkid, Netng learned new facts about the Nigerian star that most people may never have known. Here’s a list of five new things Wizkid FC gets to know about their favourite act:

1. Wizkid is working to release an album with London-based Nigerian rapper, Skepta. He initially said he was going to make an album with the rapper in 2021, and then reneged on his statement, saying the album was coming soon.

He said, ‘I think 2021, I’m gonna make an album with Skepta’. He then added, ‘You know what, let me rephrase. I’m going to make an album with Skepta, coming soon.’

2. He doesn’t like to give exact dates for his projects because he likes to surprise his fans, tries to avoid the pressure that comes with a date, and he’s always late. He told Julie Adenuga before the concert that, ‘My problem is I love to give people surprises. That’s why I don’t like to give dates or tell you when it’s going to come. I just say “it’s coming soon”. I hate when you can predict me.’

He later agrees with Julie that he also avoids giving dates because he is always late. He concludes by saying, ‘I don’t like to say we have this one coming tomorrow then I will now put pressure on myself’.

3. Wizkid met P2J while Burna Boy was recording African Giant. Pro2Jay, the full variation of the producer’s nickname, produced four songs off the Made in Lagos album. He worked on ‘Ginger’ featuring Burna Boy, ‘Smile’ featuring H.E.R, ‘No Stress’, and ‘Mighty Wine’.

Wizkid said they met at a ‘Burna Session’ and the first song they worked together on was ‘Ginger’. They met while Burna Boy was still working on the vibes for African Giant. Wizkid heard the tunes for ‘Ginger’ that day and immediately connected with the song. That was how they began their work relationship.

4. The last song Wizkid made in his house is ‘Joro’. He says his son, Zion’s extra energy around the house made it a bit difficult for him to record at home. He told BBC Radio 1 Xtra, ‘The last song I made in the house was Joro, and I had to wait till he (Zion) went to sleep to make that.’

5. His earliest musical influences were legends like Ebenezer Obey, King Sunny Ade, Fela Anikulapo-Kuti and Bob Marley. He still uses elements of their sounds in his music now, just as he did at the earlier stages in his career.

Another thing fans may not have known about the 30-year-old is that his best food is jollof rice, plantain, and suya. He says he loves suya because he loves to eat meat.

Wizkid loves to disappear for long periods on social media when he hardly ever posts anything. But one thing is sure about the artiste – he loves his fans. It’s videos like this, that makes him so endearing to them, and makes it possible for him to be one of the biggest exports and voices out of Africa.

Best Friends, Influence and A Strange Interview

My first recollection of a best friend was this kid named Joshua (I can’t remember his surname for the life of me). I was maybe 5 or 6, but I remember Joshua was from a middle-class family. To give context, I schooled in a pretty elite primary school, and typically, in each classroom, you would have sons and daughters of the wealthiest people around.

influence

However, in a class which had some super-rich kids, Joshua was the boy everyone wanted to be friends with. Even at such a young age, Joshua was by far the most popular kid in school, the coolest kid around. We all wanted to talk like him, look like him, we wanted to be him.

He didn’t have fancy toys or fancy shoes, but he had something that made him very endearing. looking back at it now, it’s safe to say he had influence.

Fast forward some 18 years later and I’m in an interview for a marketing communications intern. The interviewee seems slightly nervous, and to help ease her nerves, we ask what we thought was a pretty straightforward question: Who’s an influencer? She replies, “My Father.”

Her reply stuns everybody in the room and some of us even chuckle at her response. Obviously, her father did not have a million followers on social media, nor was he a world-renowned entertainer, so how could he possibly be an influencer, right?

The idea of influence and influencer in the context of marketing communications is typically someone who has the power to cause an effect on others because of their authority, knowledge, position, or relationship with their audience. After all, influencer marketing exists solely to help brands convert customers and it is the reason why reports suggest that businesses are making $5.20 for every $1 spent on influencer marketing.

However, as marketing communications people, we can sometimes forget that influence in its purest form isn’t only what we see on social media. It’s not just the likes, retweets, or comments. And you really can’t blame us for a somewhat skewed perspective, especially with as high as 67% of marketing communications professionals constantly engaging with influencers for content promotion.

This kind of relationship between brands, marketing professionals and influencers can sometimes stereotype the definition of what influence is or should be.

BHM’s Global day of Influence, which kicks off on November 22, 2020, could be the first step in helping us recognise that in our own little way, we have the power to cause the change that we hope to see in the world, we all are, in our little ways, influencers.

You may have 10 followers, 20, or even no follower. Heck, you may not even be on social media, but as long as you’ve got a voice, and you’ve got people who listen, then maybe you just are more influential than you think.

In the 18 years between my first “influencer” experience and my epiphany during that strange interview, the world changed, the internet evolved and we were blessed (and cursed) with social media. However, with a day dedicated to reminding us of our individual and collective influence, maybe we are on a verge of witnessing a new, and much-needed translation to the word “influence”.

It’s been three episodes of nerves, guts and aww-inducing love stories on Africa Magic’s brand new show, ‘Shoot Your Shot’ hosted by actress and BBNaija alumna, Bisola Aiyeola.

shoot your shot

‘Shoot Your Shot’ might be a popular phrase in pop culture and social media but the show is like nothing we’ve ever seen on Nigerian TV.

Bisola and the ‘Shoot Your Shot’ team set the ball rolling for secret admirers to voice their feelings for their crush. Sometimes it works, other times it doesn’t, but the build-up and the dates make for a really good watch.

In episode 1, we met Obinna Montero, a 26-year-old Lagos-based chef who has been secretly crushing on Jessica Kings, a fellow chef. The two had met on a cooking show and despite taking an instant liking to her, he never mustered the courage to tell her how he truly feels about her.

And here’s where Shoot Your Shot came in. With the help of Bisola and the team, he set up an intimate dinner where he poured out his heart to Jessica.

Jessica, 21, was a bit hesitant initially because according to her, she sees Obinna around Festac Town with a couple of girls. Obinna tried to explain that he doesn’t have any feelings for those girls, but she insisted that they remain friends and see how it goes.

After a little persuasion and intervention by Bisola, Jessica gave in and admitted she was being coy because she’s always liked him.

In episode 2, Emmanuel Akpotang a 32-year-old technician and repentant serial player tries to win the heart of Vivian Nwabueze, a student and entrepreneur.

They met on a set where they were both working but at the time she was in a relationship. A couple of months ago, however, she broke up with her boyfriend and he saw it as an opportunity to slide in.

He approached the Shoot Your Shot team to help set him up with Vivian.

Vivian, 23, was very excited about meeting her admirer but all that changed the moment she set her eyes on him.

She accused him of being a serial cheat and said he was the last person she expected to see.

Not even the intimate setting or Bisola’s pleas could get her to give him a chance.

Episode 3 introduced us to Matilda Okonkwo, the first female admirer on the show.

Matilda is a 22-year-old model who’s currently studying Criminology at the National Open University.

Matilda has had a crush on Eddy Montana, 27,  a car dealer and model, from the moment she first saw him at the mall with a mutual friend.

She was immediately struck by his incredibly good looks but also the fact that he didn’t pay any attention to her. See, Matilda has always been used to men falling over themselves to get her attention so you can understand why Eddy’s attitude piqued her interest.

She wasn’t bold enough to ask for his number, so she started stalking him on social media and even bombarding his DMs with messages, all to no avail.

When Bisola eventually introduced both of them, Eddy didn’t remember her, but he was pleasantly surprised by her beauty. And when she finally worked up the courage to ask him to be her boyfriend, he didn’t waste any time saying yes.

What will episode 4 bring us? Tune in to Africa Magic, DStv Channel 151 1t 6:30 PM this Sunday to find out!

If you haven’t been keeping up with Africa Magic’s new dating show, Shoot Your Shot, we’re here to tell you that you’ve been spending your Sunday nights wrong!

We’re not kidding. The show hosted by actress, Bisola Aiyeola is possibly the most entertaining show on TV right now. And this isn’t just because Bisola is an excellent host – we’ve already established that the BBNaija star easily excels in any role she takes on. Her wit and bubbly personality keep you glued for the 25 minutes duration of the show.

But even more entertaining are the guests who the Shoot Your Shot show is centred around. Each week we get to meet an admirer trying to win over a crush with the help of Bisola and the team. Each prospective couple and their dynamic situation present a dramatic spin that would have you on the edge of your seat.

The latest episode introduced us to Peter Taiwo, a 29-year-old Consumer Engagement Executive who moved to Lagos in 2018 to further his career. A few months ago, while shopping at the mall, Peter met Sesi and for him, it was love at first sight.

But even though they exchanged numbers and kept in touch, Peter still held back on asking her out because he wanted to take his time to get to know her.

Fully satisfied that he now knows her enough to want to make her a part of his life, he approached Shoot Your Shot to set him up with her.

As always, they planned an intimate dinner and invited Sesi over.

Sesi was easily the highlight of the show. Her outspokenness and theatrics gave us more belly laughs than we bargained for. And it’s easy to see why Peter who has a calmer and more subdued personality would fall head over heels in love with her.

Sesi, 25,  was pleasantly surprised to see that Peter has a crush on her but she decided she didn’t want to say “yes” to him the first time he asked her to be his girlfriend. She instead suggested that they go on a second date.

And just when we thought she couldn’t throw any more surprises at us, she stood up and gave him a kiss.

Shoot Your Shot airs on Africa Magic, DStv Channel 151 at 6:30 PM every Sunday!

Earlier this year, Omah Lay, the Port Harcourt-raised artiste, took a shot at the spotlight with his debut EP ‘Get Layd’. The sensual voice and sweet melodies made his music comforting during the quarantine.

The EP broke records across streaming platforms and topped the music charts for months, it is of one Nigeria’s hottest projects this year.

It wasn’t long before Omah Lay started collaborating with the likes of Wizkid, Olamide, Adekunle Gold, 6LACK and more. The young boy who never believed he could be a superstar is now well on his way to stardom.

Seeing that there are only five songs, I will rank them in order of my least favourite to the bangers on this album.

  1. Damn Ft. 6LACK

When ‘Damn’ dropped, it sent me into fits! Now placing 6LACK on this track is absolute madness. This song will make you pray to God to give you the talent of singing. I am about to rinse and repeat this song till Omah Lay begs me to stop. Lol!

4. Confession

Omah takes us a little deeper into his space. It gives a clearer understanding of what artistes go through behind the scene. Omah Lay’s rhythmic expression on this track is mind-blowing.

When Omah said “I Dey wait for you for artillery, make you come show me mathematics”, Damn, Omah Lay has been a bad boy!

  1. My Bebe

As a classic lover boy, Omah Lay’s silk voice on this track makes it such a beautiful intro into the EP. However, the sound feels like what I’ve heard before. But I like how the sound allows his voice to stand out against the instruments. I definitely will go back to listen.

  1. Can’t Relate

This one gets me emotional. The lyrics are deep. Omah Lay expresses his thoughts on his newfound life of fame. He also prays to God to keep him away from enemies and fake people.

In a cold world where people are fake, I think this song speaks what the heart can’t say out loud.

“Lord delete them, delete them, delete every virus from my system” is the line for me.

  1. Godly

This has to be my favourite track on the EP. It reminds me of the first time I listened to ‘Hand of God’ by John Bellion, I was confused as to whether it was supposed to be a religious song or not.

The song is an extension of ‘Can’t Relate’. The transition into the chorus is pure beauty. The fact that Omah Lay emphasises God as his backbone is remarkable.

When Omah said “Oluwa na my Kanjidam, me I no try to reconnect the light” I felt that!

Overall Rating

I see Omah Lay expressing himself more on this EP. It’s a classic case of an artiste who is trying to figure out his way in this newfound fame.

The EP also expresses the thoughts of a maturing artiste on the rise. I think it’s safe to say Omah Lay has won the award for the next rated artiste. Period!

This album was a beautiful listen, for me, it’s a solid 8 out of 10.

Omah Lay it’s high time you gave your fans a name. Let me suggest something nice: Omah Ladies. Lol.

“The confusion about traditional medicine comes from religion, Christianity in particular. Religion makes us throw away everything in our culture.”- Father Anselm Adodo on Public Eye.
On Sunday, November 22, 2020, Funmi Iyanda had conversations about what should comprise primary healthcare in Nigeria, and the implications of a fusion of traditional and modern medicine with the founder of Pax Herbals Clinic and Research Laboratories, Father Anselm Adodo, The CEO of Quincy Herbals, Mrs Tobi Ayodele-Keeney, and The Head of the Centre for Research Complimentary Traditions & Alternative Medicine (CRTCAM), Dr O.O. Aina.
We were taken on a journey to Ibadan – the traditional medicine markets, Bode and Oopo-yeosa precisely. The bustle of the markets implied that many have begun to favour traditional medicine over synthetic medicine. At the markets, the Public Eye team interviewed three women who have practised traditional pharmacology and healing for decades.
Father Anslem Adodo, a Benedictine monk with a passion for pharmacology, in a discussion about why traditional medicine has been painted black by Nigerians stated, “The confusion comes from religion, Christianity in particular. Religion makes us throw away everything in our culture.”
He also criticised the current system of medicine practised in the country. “The current high-tech medical system is focused on waiting for people to fall sick so they can use high-tech machines to diagnose and treat them.”
Funmi Iyanda agreed wholeheartedly. “We live in a world that has to have an answer for COVID-19 and needs to develop alternative systems for these complex situations going on in the world.”
Tobi Ayodele-Keeney and Dr O.O. Aina dropped their two cents on the current COVID-19 pandemic. According to Mrs Ayodele-Keeney, “Drug-resistant malaria is more of a problem than COVID-19.” Dr Aina believes that a majority of Nigerians have the coronavirus but are asymptomatic.
In a follow-up conversation about the challenges of integrating traditional and modern medicine, Mrs Ayodele-Keeney revealed, “There needs to be research and development of African traditional medicine. We need to standardize the process and the people in the practice.”

Women at Risk International Foundation launched the No Tolerance Campaign last year to address the prevalence of violence against girls and women in communities across Nigeria. Nigeria responded and our citizens across the country stood with WARIF to say “No Tolerance” to rape and sexual violence and the digital campaign reached an estimate of 10 million people on social media.

WARIF No Tolerance March

Following the on-going success of the campaign and the dire need for more awareness on issues of sexual violence, over the annual 16 Days of Activism to highlight gender based violence globally, the maiden edition of the No Tolerance March was carried out in December 2019. This march brought together over 700 men and women, young and all from all works of life who walked 3km across the Lekki/Ikoyi link bridge saying No Tolerance! to the issue of sexual violence.

This year, following the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, the #WARIFNoTolerance March is going virtual! Participants, friends, survivors and supporters of WARIF are encouraged to wear their No Tolerance T-shirts and march, jog, walk or run -at home, on the bridge or in the streets to raise awareness to sexual violence.

The date is 5th of December 2020 and participation is from 7am -7pm. Participants are encouraged to show that they are part of the march and stay connected by sharing and posting their pictures and videos on social media with the hashtag #WARIFNoTolerance and by tagging @WARIF_NG.

Speaking on the importance of the march, Founder of WARIF, Dr. Kemi DaSilva- Ibru stated that “the rise of the covid-19 pandemic brought about a shadow pandemic evidenced by a spike in the rate of sexual and domestic violence cases as survivors were forced to quarantine with their abusers.

This increases the urgency of ensuring essential serviced are made available offered free of charge by the organization and why it is imperative that WARIF continues to raise awareness to the prevalence of this menace.

We are calling on everyone to join us again this year by wearing their t-shirts and saying
NO TOLERANCE! To this national crisis”

This weekend, MTN Y’ello Star viewers watched as 14 finalists displayed their vocal strength and performance abilities as they laid it all on the stage, to determine who would come out on top and who would be relegated.

At the end of Sunday’s outing, the sixth episode of the show’s debut season, five of the 14 contestants, who are at the bottom of the leaderboard after scoring the lowest cumulative points, are up for exclusion from live performance.

Week 3 kicked off with highlife and folk music performances from the finalists with each performance rated within the range of 10. Jesse Drumz performed first singing “Time Na Money” by Mike Okri.

At the end of his performance, Banky W, one of 3 judges on the show expressed delight at his improvement saying he was “starting to come into his own”. The judges rated his performance a 6.

David Garland rendered Sir. Shina Peters’ hit record “Afro Juju” next, earning himself a high 9.3 rating and accolades from Omawumi. The show didn’t witness another 9-point performance until Dotti and Freeborn rendered Orlando Julius’, Ololufe and Taxi Driver by IK Dairo respectively.

Asides watching the contestants put in some work to keep themselves in the show, performances from episode 5 proved to be a journey down memory lane as contestants performed Nigerian classics from various decades from the 70s to the 2010s.

Rael scored the lowest for the highlife performances as her rendition of Onyeka Onwenu’s “You and I” didn’t impress the judges enough to get her a score better than 4.3.

For Sunday’s episode 6, the contestants performed a mix of pop and RnB hits by Aretha Franklin, John Legend, Alicia Keys, Rihanna and Seal. The top performance of the day was Freeborn’s powerful delivery of Aretha Franklin’s “You Make Me Feel Like a Natural Woman”, which earned her a 19.6 rating, as the judges ranked contestants on a scale of 0 to 20.

Rael once again got the lowest rating, as her performance of Alicia Keys' Empire State of Mind earned her an 11.3 rating. Guest judge, Olisa Adibua criticized her song choice, stating that though she had fun performing it, she could have picked a better-suited song.

Gideon’s performance was a highlight of the night as all the judges rated him an 18, a huge rise from his highlife performance that only got a 6.7 on the 10 scale. Jesse Drumz, the visually
impaired finalist also brought some flair to his performance playing the drums for his rendition of Harry Styles’ Watermelon Sugar.

He joined Uzezi and the duo of Oiza and Meyi on the shortlist of contestants who played an instrument during their performance. Banky W used the judges chat session as an opportunity to remind the contestants that talent is never enough in the music industry, it takes more than that to succeed. “If you are talented and entitled and not willing to push yourself and get the other things you need to complete that picture; you will never make it.”

At the end of Sunday’s show, Dave Willz, G-Isaac, Uzezi, Rael and Melody became the first 5 contestants to be put up for exclusion and will need votes to stay in the competition. To vote for G-Isaac,  Uzezi, Dave Willz, Melody and Rael Text “VOTE 001”, “VOTE 003”, “VOTE 008”, “VOTE 011” “VOTE 012” to 50061 respectively on MTN and 9MOBILE networks at N30 naira per text. Terms and Conditions Apply.

Voting ends on Wednesday evening after which the excluded contestant would be announced at the next gala, which airs every weekend on stations across the country. The excluded contestants will lose their right to perform at the live shows but will remain in the Y’ello Hub to continue their musical education delivered by acclaimed faculty members.
