The Nigerian Broadcasting Corporation (NBC) recently banned 18 songs by Nigerian acts and their foreign counterparts from public broadcast. This development has since drawn reactions from many entertainers including veteran comedian, Ali Baba and rapper, Naeto C whose Tony Montana was also prohibited from broadcast for ‘depicting violence.’
It is however surprising that NBC which cited reasons such as ‘vulgar lyrics, obscene video and indecent exposure’, for banning the songs, left out some tracks which glaringly flouted all the regulations.
Some of these songs are listed below…
Shoki: Lil Kesh might have actually been describing a dance but he could have kept it clean like Orezi did on his own version. With suggestive lines like: ‘ bami wa omoge to ba yodi (find me a girl who would shoot out her bum), mi o ni k’o wa twerk to wa gbon’di (I am not asking you to twerk or shake your booty),’ one is forced to ask if he was really singing about a dance style. Just as we were trying to figure out what the young rapper was up to, label boss, Olamide came at us with: furo rabata we t’eku gbe wa saye ma lo ja bata ye mi o ma le salaye, bere lowo taye (an outrageous description of booty)’. But then, NBC left it off their list.
Ladi: It remains unknown what Olamide and Phyno were thinking when they decided to record this song. The track which features YBNL’s Lil Kesh is filled with vulgar lyrics from A-Z yet it surprisingly didn’t get banned by NBC.
69 missed calls
JE Records lead act, Jah Bless gathers a couple of his friends; Olamide, Reminisce, CDQ, Lil Kesh and Chinko Ekun on this track to sing about industry groupies but what did they deliver? One of the most lewd songs ever released in Nigeria. It also didn’t make the NBC list despite the fact that it contains several vulgar lyrics and the video was also explicit.
German Juice
The song by Northside’s Cynthia Morgan could have passed the explicit test despite lines like ‘They want the girl with the biggest behind,’ but the ‘I’m taken’ singer decided to show us what she was really talking about with the video.
LAX Fine Boy
Wizkid’s Star Boy Music act, L.A.X recently dropped the video to his Olamide featured single,’ Fine Boy’. However, rather than showing us what a fine boy was, he hit our faces obscene shots of girls with bikinis. It also didn’t make the NBC list.
Early Momo: Patoranking leaves little to imagination when he sings about a girl who wants oral sex from him every morning on Dj Hazan’s Early Momo. However, the song is also surprising missing on NBC’s NTBB list.
Crazy- Seyi Shay featuring Wizkid
The song appeared harmless in terms of lyrics and the visuals would have been deemed appropriate if not for the scene where Seyi Shay grabbed Wizkid’s penis.
BBHMM
Since NBC included foreign songs on their list of banned songs, it is totally unforgivable that it left out Rihanna’s BBHMM. The video conspicuously has vulgar contents, depiction of violence and the numerous obscenities.
