Last Saturday, the 14 MTN Y’ello Star finalists dug deep to reveal their hidden Rastafarians. It wasn’t an easy task as many of the contestants struggled to deliver as often as they’ve done in the past galas. It didn’t help that they had just seen four of their fellow contestants drop into relegation. It was clear that the competition was toughening up.
The evening started with a glimpse into the life of contestants in the Y’ello Star Hub. They showed off their lyrical dexterity during a task in the hub. They ran through quick freestyles, using the words – pulse, star, power, authentic, and fearless. Viewers also got a look into one of their sessions with the Berklee School of Music as they were learning about ‘vocal technique’.
The MTN Y’ello Star faculty cleaned the initial scoring slate, and all contestants got to start again from scratch this weekend. This created free rein for a new crew of leaders and five new possible relegated contestants.
The seventh gala show this season started with contestants singing their version of ‘Boombastic’ by Shaggy together. Then the initial 14 contestants became 10. Four out of the five contestants who were up for possible relegation from the previous week were dropped from the race. The doors judged Rael, Dave Willz, Melody, and Uzezi out of the running for the grand prize and dropped them to relegation. The doors, through viewers’ votes, only saved G.Isaac.

They got a chance to say their goodbyes to viewers as they performed a medley of hit Reggae songs. All of the relegated contestants chose to stay on in the hub and finish their courses with the Berklee School of Music and Henly Busines School. While they will no longer get a chance to win the MTN Y’ello Star capacity-building show, their journey is far from over. They still get a chance to learn from some of the greatest music and business minds, a first of its kind in Nigerian Reality TV.
The top 10 contestants made up of Storm, Dotti, Fay Fay Diamond, Gideon, Oiza and Meyi, Jesse D, David G, Freeborn, Caesar, G-Isaac, then got to battle it out for the position of ‘Reggae Master’.
They rated the contestants out of a total of ten marks by the three judges – Banky W, Omawumi; and guest judge, Olisa Adibua for the reggae gala show. They aggregated the final scores from the addition of scores from all of the judges divided by three. The contestants in the bottom five face the chance of possible relegation.
Just like he did last week, Jesse D started the show with a great performance of Lucky Dube’s ‘House of Exile’, earning himself an average score of 7 from the judges.

The girls brought their A-game to the show and scored some of the highest ratings of the night with their fun and energetic performances. Fay Fay Diamond performed ‘I wish by Waje’ and received an 8.3 rating from the judges, alongside a series of compliments. The resident Y’ello Star twins brought all of their drama and energy, and killed their performance of ‘Bam Bam’ by Sister Nancy, earning themselves an 8.1 rating.
Freeborn has remained consistent throughout the show and she proved again that there isn’t any musical genre too hard for her to handle. She stole the show with her beautiful performance of Waje and 2Baba’s ‘Frenemies’. She got the highest score of the night, receiving a 9.5 rating from the judges.
Only Caesar came close all night with his brilliant performance of ‘Many Rivers to Cross’ by Jimmy Cliff. The judges showed their admiration for his dedication to the craft and his growth by scoring him a 9.3.

Dotti and David Garland, who had ruled previous galas struggled a bit to nail their reggae performances. For the first time since they began on the show, they both failed to sweep the judges off their feet. Dotti’s rendition of Patoranking’s ‘Girlie O’ saw him get a 7.3 rating from the judges. While David Garland’s performance of ‘Mr Loverman’ by Shaba Ranks didn’t quite cut it as the judges gave him a score of ‘7’, his lowest yet on the show.
G-Isaac barely pulled it together after surviving relegation earlier in the day and almost botched his performance of Wizkid’s ‘Joy’. His forgetfulness of some of the lyrics earned him a 6.5 rating, despite trying to save himself by adding some originality to the song.

Gideon and Storm received the lowest scores of the night. Gideon’s performance of ‘Daddy Yo’ by Wizkid only got him a score of 6 from the judges. Storm struggled the most, earning a 5.3 rating for his performance of ‘Slow Down’ by Skip Marley.
During the hot topic, the judges debated whether or not the lyrics or beat makes a hit song. They concluded that it depends on what works for you. Olisa shared his opinion saying, ‘It’s a double-edged answer. Lyrics are very important, but then we’ve seen some songs that become huge based on the beat.’ Banky W then added, ‘Do what’s true to you. If it’s melody, lyrics, beats, all of the above, or one of the three – just do it.’
At the end of the show, hosts Tobi Bakre and Hilda Bacci listed Storm, Gideon, G-Isaac, David G, and Jesse, as the bottom 5, who could be put up for relegation. However, contestants get a chance to change things with their next performance on Sunday and save themselves from the possibility of getting dropped from the race to the finale.
Will they save themselves with better performances on Sunday, or will they remain in the bottom 5 and be put up for possible relegation? Only time and excellence will tell. Luckily, even if they are excluded, they will remain in the Y’ello Hub to continue their musical education delivered by acclaimed faculty members.
