Last Saturday, the 14 MTN Y’ello Star finalists dug deep to reveal their hidden Rastafarians. It wasn’t an easy task as many of the contestants struggled to deliver as often as they’ve done in the past galas. It didn’t help that they had just seen four of their fellow contestants drop into relegation. It was clear that the competition was toughening up.

relegation

The evening started with a glimpse into the life of contestants in the Y’ello Star Hub. They showed off their lyrical dexterity during a task in the hub. They ran through quick freestyles, using the words – pulse, star, power, authentic, and fearless. Viewers also got a look into one of their sessions with the Berklee School of Music as they were learning about ‘vocal technique’.

The MTN Y’ello Star faculty cleaned the initial scoring slate, and all contestants got to start again from scratch this weekend. This created free rein for a new crew of leaders and five new possible relegated contestants.

Music reality shows

The seventh gala show this season started with contestants singing their version of ‘Boombastic’ by Shaggy together. Then the initial 14 contestants became 10. Four out of the five contestants who were up for possible relegation from the previous week were dropped from the race. The doors judged Rael, Dave Willz, Melody, and Uzezi out of the running for the grand prize and dropped them to relegation. The doors, through viewers’ votes, only saved G.Isaac.

relegation
Rael, Melody, Dave Willz, and Uzezi are out of the running for the grand prize.

They got a chance to say their goodbyes to viewers as they performed a medley of hit Reggae songs. All of the relegated contestants chose to stay on in the hub and finish their courses with the Berklee School of Music and Henly Busines School. While they will no longer get a chance to win the MTN Y’ello Star capacity-building show, their journey is far from over. They still get a chance to learn from some of the greatest music and business minds, a first of its kind in Nigerian Reality TV.

The top 10 contestants made up of Storm, Dotti, Fay Fay Diamond, Gideon, Oiza and Meyi, Jesse D, David G, Freeborn, Caesar, G-Isaac, then got to battle it out for the position of ‘Reggae Master’.

They rated the contestants out of a total of ten marks by the three judges – Banky W, Omawumi; and guest judge, Olisa Adibua for the reggae gala show. They aggregated the final scores from the addition of scores from all of the judges divided by three. The contestants in the bottom five face the chance of possible relegation.

jesse d mtn yellow star 2020

Just like he did last week, Jesse D started the show with a great performance of Lucky Dube’s ‘House of Exile’, earning himself an average score of 7 from the judges.

relegation
Fay Fay Diamond and Oiza and Meyi brought their A-game to the show.

The girls brought their A-game to the show and scored some of the highest ratings of the night with their fun and energetic performances. Fay Fay Diamond performed ‘I wish by Waje’ and received an 8.3 rating from the judges, alongside a series of compliments. The resident Y’ello Star twins brought all of their drama and energy, and killed their performance of ‘Bam Bam’ by Sister Nancy, earning themselves an 8.1 rating.

freeborn mtn yellow star 2020

Freeborn has remained consistent throughout the show and she proved again that there isn’t any musical genre too hard for her to handle. She stole the show with her beautiful performance of Waje and 2Baba’s ‘Frenemies’. She got the highest score of the night, receiving a 9.5 rating from the judges.

relegation

Only Caesar came close all night with his brilliant performance of ‘Many Rivers to Cross’ by Jimmy Cliff. The judges showed their admiration for his dedication to the craft and his growth by scoring him a 9.3.

David Garland and Dotti struggled to nail their reggae performances.

Dotti and David Garland, who had ruled previous galas struggled a bit to nail their reggae performances. For the first time since they began on the show, they both failed to sweep the judges off their feet. Dotti’s rendition of Patoranking’s ‘Girlie O’ saw him get a 7.3 rating from the judges. While David Garland’s performance of ‘Mr Loverman’ by Shaba Ranks didn’t quite cut it as the judges gave him a score of ‘7’, his lowest yet on the show.

relegation

G-Isaac barely pulled it together after surviving relegation earlier in the day and almost botched his performance of Wizkid’s ‘Joy’. His forgetfulness of some of the lyrics earned him a 6.5 rating, despite trying to save himself by adding some originality to the song.

Gideon and Storm received the lowest scores of the night.

Gideon and Storm received the lowest scores of the night. Gideon’s performance of ‘Daddy Yo’ by Wizkid only got him a score of 6 from the judges. Storm struggled the most, earning a 5.3 rating for his performance of ‘Slow Down’ by Skip Marley.

During the hot topic, the judges debated whether or not the lyrics or beat makes a hit song. They concluded that it depends on what works for you. Olisa shared his opinion saying, ‘It’s a double-edged answer. Lyrics are very important, but then we’ve seen some songs that become huge based on the beat.’ Banky W then added, ‘Do what’s true to you. If it’s melody, lyrics, beats, all of the above, or one of the three – just do it.’

relegation

At the end of the show, hosts Tobi Bakre and Hilda Bacci listed Storm, Gideon, G-Isaac, David G, and Jesse, as the bottom 5, who could be put up for relegation. However, contestants get a chance to change things with their next performance on Sunday and save themselves from the possibility of getting dropped from the race to the finale.

Will they save themselves with better performances on Sunday, or will they remain in the bottom 5 and be put up for possible relegation? Only time and excellence will tell. Luckily, even if they are excluded, they will remain in the Y’ello Hub to continue their musical education delivered by acclaimed faculty members.

Sunday gala shows on the MTN Y’ello Star capacity-building show are for redemption. Contestants get a chance to save themselves from possible relegation, following their performances from the previous night. Often, they bring everything they have to the stage, and last night was no different.

performances

For the Sunday show, the contestants got to sing their favourite songs. The judges then scored them up to 20 points. They added the total scores from Banky W, Omawumi, and guest judge, Olisa Adibua, and divided them by three to get the average score for each contestant. Contestants with the lowest cumulative scores (adding their ratings from Saturday and Sunday) were put up for possible relegation.

performances

Dotti started the night on a high note with a beautiful rendition of ‘Just the two of us’ by Bill Withers, earning an 18.3 score, a huge difference from his rating on Saturday. Freeborn continued the reign of good music. She used her soulful voice to deliver an amazing rendition of Roxette’s ‘It must have been love’, and earned herself 19 marks from the judges.

performances

Gideon was the only other contestant to score a 19 last night as he wowed the judges with his performance of Tjan’s ‘Smile’. Olisa was so impressed with his performance, he said, ‘You hit more notes than a bank manager’.

performances

Caesar and Fay Fay Diamond also wormed their ways into the heart of the judges, earning 17.6 and 17.1 scores respectively. Caesar gave an angelic performance of ‘Hallelujah’ by Jeff Buckley, dressed in a beautiful white hooded caftan. While Fay Fay Diamond’s rendition of John Legend’s ‘All of Me’ left the judges in awe of her.

performances

David Garland and Oiza and Meyi managed to snag high ratings of 16.3 and 16.5 each. David performed ‘Promises’ by Calvin Harris and Sam Smith, but didn’t quite meet the standard he set for himself. The Judges agreed that his vocals were great, but the performance was basic. Oiza and Meyi, on the hand, performed ‘Playing Games’ by Summer Walker, and were celebrated for their performance by the judges. Banky, Omawumi and Olisa were in agreement that the girls were growing, and this was one of their best performances yet.

Storm, Jesse D, and G-Isaac struggled the most through the night. Storm’s energetic performance of ‘I got you’ by James Brown got him a 14.3 rating from the judges. They agreed that it was one of his best performances on the show, but it wasn’t enough to get him a higher score.

Jesse D failed to heal the judges with his performance of Marvin Gaye’s ‘Sexual Healing’, and earned himself a score of 14. G-Isaac’s decision to play it safe with his rendition of ‘Seven Years’ by Lucas Graham didn’t sit well with the judges, and it landed him with a 14.5 rating.

performances

The show ended with new rankings. Freeborn took the lead this week with a cumulative of 28.5, followed by Caesar with 26.9. Dotti maintained his top-three spot from previous weeks with 25.6 and was closely followed by Fay Fay who stole a 25.4 this week. Gideon whose amazing performance of Tjan’s ‘Smile’ earned him one of the highest scores of the night, escaped from possible relegation with a cumulative of 25 scores.

The resident twins on the show, Oiza and Meyi almost secured a spot in next week’s show, but their 24.6 score was not enough. David Garland, who up until this week has had a fantastic run on the show, also faces possible relegation with his 23.3 rating. G-Isaac is back on the chopping board after earning a 21 cumulative score. Fans and viewers could be saying goodbye to Jesse D and Storm next week since their performances didn’t quite cut it, and left them with 21 and 19.6 respective cumulative scores.

Viewers can save their favourite contestants by sending ‘Vote’ alongside their unique numbers to 50061. Voting is only applicable to MTN and 9Mobile users at just N30 per vote. Voting begins on Sunday evening and ends on Wednesday night. The hosts, Tobi Bakre and Hilda Baci will announce the excluded contestant at the next gala, which airs every weekend on stations across the country. The excluded contestants will lose their right to perform at the live shows but will remain in the Y’ello Hub to continue their musical education delivered by acclaimed faculty members.

Shoot Your Shot with Bisola Aiyeola is proving the perfect 30 minutes escape for a Sunday night and it’s not hard to see why.

The Africa Magic dating show is simply the most hilarious thing on TV right now and everyone seems to agree with this.

The latest episode introduces us to Nuel Oyebade, a 28-year-old photographer based in Lagos.

Nuel has been crushing on Victoria for two whole years but hasn’t had the courage to express his feelings to her.

He had met her two years ago while taking a stroll on the beach and offered to take a picture of her and her friend. Victoria’s friend dismissed him because she thought he wanted to take the picture in exchange for money, but unlike her friend, Victoria was very pleasant and agreed to strike a pose for him.

They exchanged numbers so he could send the photos to her and a friendship developed from there.

But even though they kept in touch, they never saw each other again for the simple reason that Victoria stays on the Island while Nuel lives on the mainland.

Anyway, with the help of Bisola and the Shoot Your Shot team, he planned an intimate dinner to finally tell her how he feels about her.

When the big reveal finally came, Victoria was surprised to see that he was the one who planned the whole thing as they had only seen each other that one time.

Nuel was very nervous but in the middle of their dinner, he finally told her he wants to be her boyfriend. Victoria thanked him for going all out to plan the dinner but let him know that she needed more time to get to know him and see if he fits into her future.

Shoot Your Shot airs on Africa Magic, DStv Channel 151 at 6:30 PM every Sunday!

A hot topic on the latest episode of MTN Y’ello Star was “Is talent enough to survive in the  entertainment industry?” This was an interesting conversation amongst the judges on the show because budding music artistes tend to believe their vocal prowess is all that is required for a major breakthrough in the Nigerian entertainment industry.

While that may appear to have worked for some exceptional musical stars, the saying “Hard work beats talent when talent doesn’t work hard” comes to mind. This point of view was further reiterated when the judges for MTN Y’ello Star music-reality show shared their views during the judges’ chat session.

Show judge, Banky W, an ace musician and record-label owner, seized the opportunity to remind the contestants that it takes more than having a musical talent to succeed in the entertainment space. According to him, “If you are talented, entitled, and not willing to push yourself to get the other things you need to complete that picture, you will not make it.”

As a result, he advised the contestants to display the perfect blend of charisma and finesse that is required to thrive within the Nigerian entertainment space. Popular songstress, Omawumi, and one of Nigeria’s finest radio presenters, Olisa Adibua, also shared this sentiment. They encouraged the finalists to constantly strive for improvement in order to be a force within the four walls of the entertainment industry.

This is because it is instrumental in refining the overall stage performance that is required to propel a budding music star to the limelight. MTN Y’ello Star music reality project is a platform that empowers the musical skills of Nigerian youths while providing them with excellent training aimed at improving their entrepreneurial skills.

As finalists of MTN Y’ello Star competition thrilled the judges with their electrifying-reggae performances, Tobi Bakre, actor and show host, asked for the judges’ take on a frequently debated topic, “What makes a hit song? The lyrics or the beat?”

Although this question appears to be an easy one, the judges of MTN Y’ello Star music the reality show had different perspectives to the seemingly simple but complicated question. Olisa Adibua, top media personality and guest judge, noted that the answer is a double-edged one in that both the lyrics and the beat serve as a determiner to the success a song achieves, especially in the Nigerian entertainment space.

He further revealed the complex musical choices of Nigerians when he said, “We like our beats in Nigeria. However, the Nigerian audience is biased towards simpler repetitive lyrics.” Ace musician and record-label owner, Banky W, advised aspiring musicians to dwell on their strengths.

He then admonished promising-music stars to discover a style that resonates with them in terms of melody, beats and lyrics creation. Popular-female singer, Omawumi, subtly reiterated this, as she believes that the creation of a hit song hinges on being creative at all levels of music production.

MTN Y’ello Star is a music reality project designed specifically to groom the musical creativity of Nigerian youths while providing them with top-notch entrepreneurial training. This is in a bid to empower Nigerian youths with the necessary skills needed to succeed on the global entertainment scene positioning Nigeria as an African hub of music creativity.

“Children are dying. Children are being molested.  People need to spend their lives in jail, and you’ll see, this culture will disappear.”- Mr. James Ibor on Public Eye.

Public Eye

On Sunday, November 29, 2020, Funmi Iyanda had a conversation about sex slavery in the Keyi community of Cross River State with The Project Director Vision Spring Initiatives, Mrs. Ngozi Nwosu -Juba, The Principal Council Basic Rights Council Initiative (BRCI), Mr. James Ibor Esq. and the Former Lagos (now Kano) Zonal Commander of NAPTIP, Mr Daniel Atokolo.
The show began with a brief documentary which shed light on “Money Wives”. Girls, some younger than 8, some from birth, are betrothed to men old enough to father them as surety for debts. The girls spend their lives as slaves. They are molested and stripped of their rights. If their “husbands” die, they are passed on to the next male in the family.
Overwhelmed with emotion from the documentary, Funmi Iyanda asked, “Why does everyone hate women?” Ms. Ngozi echoed Funmi’s sentiment. “How do you describe where a girl child is hated so much? They are slaves! Calling them money wives is painting a beautiful picture.”
It was revealed that Public Eye has a money wife on standby. Unfortunately, the family of her late “husband”, who has refused to release her even after his death, whisked her away shortly before she could join Public Eye via phone.
The conversation moved on to what the Cross River State government has done to abolish this heinous tradition. “Cross River State has not done enough. After their campaigns, they prosecuted no one to serve as a deterrent. These girls are still suffering. The practice is getting more vicious and dangerous.”, said Mr. James Ibor.
Having spent time in this region, in collaboration with the Cross River State government and other agencies, he was frustrated with the little change effected in the area.
Mr Ibor continued, “Children are dying. Children are being molested.  These are felonies, yet not one “Money Husband” has been persecuted. People need to spend their lives in jail, and you’ll see, this culture will disappear.”
As regards what institutions such as NAPTIP can do to solve this problem, Mr Daniel Atokolo had this to say, “ Impunity persists when there are no sanctions. We can not pay off the debts that these girls are suffering because government policies should not perpetrate crime. What we should do is give a counter-narrative to what they believe in and show them examples of people who have come out of this experience and are doing well. They become ambassadors of hope.”

You can watch the full episode here: https://youtu.be/f2599Hmf17s

Public Eye airs every Sunday at 5 pm on TVC News. You can catch them on any of these television channels: DSTV (channel 418), Startimes (channel 307), GOTV (channel 45), or channel 572 on Sky.

“I’m Winning A Grammy Soon”– African Giant Producer Kel P Tells Netng In Exclusive Chat

In a space of three years, Kel P has raised himself from obscurity to working with the likes of Wizkid and Burna Boy and obtaining two Grammy nominations in what he believes is the first two of many.

Kel P Grammy

Udoma Peter Kevin, popularly known as Kel P, hails from Cross River State, but born and brought up in Lagos. Kel P started music as what I will call a ‘couch artiste‘; he wrote and recorded songs but he never released any. They are all unheard files on his system.

Nevertheless, his passion for music and beat making led him to understudy hit producer, Sarz, for about eight months while he was studying at Yaba Tech. He met Burna Boy in August 2018, and worked with him on the Grammy-nominated album, African Giant, where he produced and co-wrote 10 of the 19 songs including “On The Low” and “Pull Up.”

After this feat, Kel P went on to work with several artists home and abroad, including Niniola, Diamond Platnumz, Timaya, Reekado Banks, Wizkid, M.anifest and Dadju.

Kel P Nomination

Now he’s gotten another Grammy nomination, this time, in the ‘Best Reggae Album’ category. He produced ‘Faith’ by Skip Marley, off his album, ‘Higher Place’. This makes him one of the first Nigerian producers to get a back to back Grammy nomination and on two different projects.

Netng caught up with the ‘magic fingers’ producer to discuss his foray into reggae music, getting his second Grammy nomination and his creative process.

Two back to back Grammy nominations. Congratulations! You worked with Burna Boy on African Giant which bagged a Grammy Nom and now with Skip Marley. How does it feel to have what some might call ‘the magic touch’?

Well, it feels great to have two Grammy nominations back to back – 2019, then 2020. Yeah. And this is not the end. Like this is not the end because I’m definitely going to win the Grammy pretty soon. So this is not the end; more to come.

How did you and Skip Marley connect and what led to the making of ‘Faith’ off his ‘Higher Place’ album?

We connected on Instagram via DM. Actually, it was his A&R that hit me up. They said they wanted me to work with Skip Marley and had a track already done, but they wanted a different beat for the track. I told them “yo just send me Skip Marley’s vocals”. So they sent his vocals and I had to create a new beat entirely. While I was creating this song, I never spoke with Skip Marley, never had a conversation with him. And it took me seven months to make that song ‘Faith’. Seven good months because there was back and forth on emails, and sometimes there were delays in replies. Also, it was during the COVID-19 period so we couldn’t travel. That was why it took me that long to get the song to that point where it is now. But it was a great experience, and at the end of the day, I got to chat with Skip on Instagram and we became cool friends. Yeah man, it was great.

What inspired the venture into reggae sounds?

I’ve always loved reggae sounds, always been a huge fan of reggae music. You can tell because the project before ‘Made in Lagos’, Wizkid dropped – Soundman Vol 1. There’s a reggae track on that called ‘Mine’ that I produced. So i’ve always been a huge fan. It’s just that because of the country I am or the people I work with around here, you can’t make reggae music in Nigeria. You get me? Our sound is Afrobeat but I’m really trying to show the world what I can do. I mean my diversity; other sounds I can do. But I’ve always been a fan of reggae music, right from childhood.

Do you think producers, now more than ever, are being recognised for their craft? And do you think there is a need to create major award categories to recognize the people behind the artistes like producers and songwriters like yourself?

I mean it’s better than before. Before no one cared about the creatives; nobody cared about producers, nobody cared about songwriters. You know, they all just care about the artiste because yes, they see the artiste’s face. The artiste is the picture, the artiste is the image. But right now it’s getting better so yeah, I feel like producers are getting recognised. Definitely. But it could be way better.

Before you understudied Sarz back in 2017, what was growing up like for you? Who were your music influences and what drove you to beat making and song writing?

I’m not the guy who grew up listening to Fela Kuti and all the people way back. I grew up listening to Rihanna, grew up listening to JayZ, to Trey Songz, you feel me? Omarion, Neyo, those were the songs I heard while growing up that made me fall in love with music. I never knew I would become a producer until 2016. All my life, I was just going to the studio to record, not taking it seriously. Just going to the studio and writing songs. Until that part wasn’t working for me, and then, I switched to production in 2017. Shoutout to Sarz who put me through.

Kel P Grammy Nomination

Tell us something about your work process that people don’t know, besides your love for hotel room studios of course.

80% of the beats I create, in fact 90 % of the beats I make, I record on them. Before I hit up any artiste or before I send a beat to any artiste, I record on my beats. While creating a beat, I get stuck, and for me to continue I need vocals. I’m not in a session or I’m not in a session with an artiste so I record myself. I become the artiste, I become the producer. So I have to record my own vocals on my beat so I can be able to continue creating it. That’s how I create. I work with my own vocals and melodies before I send the beats to any artiste.

Does this mean you can make anything for any artiste without knowing them personally, working off just their vocals?

Yes I can!

Do you see yourself making your own music someday?

You know what? Umm, yes I see myself. But something big is coming, something very, very huge. It’s a changing point for me. The next level for Kel P and it’s coming very soon. Just watch and see what’s going to happen.

You’ve mentioned wanting to collaborate with Bruno Mars someday. Are you still waiting to work with him? Do you think you can entice him out of his hiatus with a beat you make?

I’ve made so many sounds that will go with his vibe and the day we meet, I’m ready! So yes, I am still waiting to work with Bruno.

The MTN Y’ello Star show has been on screens across the country for four weeks now. The show started with 40 contenders to the throne. Then they became 14 finalists. After the fourth week, the fourteen have now become ten, and four other contestants may be leaving the show at the end of this week.

contestants

While no contestant has had a perfect week yet, some have maintained a certain standard of performance that has become the expectation for them. A few contestants have become the judge’s favourite, others are fan favourites, and some have managed to capture the hearts of both the judges and the fans. We shine the light on five Y’ello Star contestants who have been the most consistent at serving amazing performances.

contestant

1. Dotti: Dotti’s first-ever performance on the Y’ello Star stage of Bill Wither’s ‘Ain’t No Sunshine’ immediately earned him the attention of the judges. His opening gala performance of Burna Boy’s ‘On The Low’ earned him their admiration. Especially, that of Omawumi who said, ‘Shift, let me faint’ afterwards. Since his first set of performances, Dotti is yet to have a bad day. His worst performance on the show so far, a reggae rendition of Patoranking’s ‘Girlie O’, earned him a 7.3 out of 10 ratings. He bounced back the next day with a soulful performance of ‘Just the two of us’ by Bill Withers, and earned himself an 18.3 score. He has captured the heart of both the judges and the audience, and he’s the only contestant of the show that has trended on Twitter.

2. Freeborn: Freeborn is a musical powerhouse, and she showed that from the first day she performed on the Y’ello star stage. Since her first performance of Adele’s ‘Rolling In The Deep’, she has continued to grow. Her performances improve with each week, and she has proven that there is no musical genre too hard for her to sing. Freeborn barely has bad days, and even when she does her voice is never the reason for it. Fans have said her worst performance, a fun rendition of Whitney Houston’s ‘Dance With Somebody’, only happened because the back-up singers were off their game.

contestant

3. Fay Fay Diamond: Fay Fay is the true definition of beauty meets talent. From serving looks, slaying the fashion and dropping amazing vocals, she has become the queen of the stage. Fay Fay gets better every week, and she never drops the ball. After finishing off her opponent, Uche, in the face-off round with a powerful rendition of Bill Wither’s ‘Lean on Me’, she has become a fan-favourite. She has a good mastery of every genre of music, including reggae.

4. David Garland: David G was one of the very first contestants to leave a mark on the show and the judges. From the moment he sang John Legend’s ‘All of Me’, the judges were in awe of him. Then he drew them in even more after his opening gala electrifying performance of Bruno Mars’ ‘Uptown Funk’. David is an amazing performer. He’s got the look, the style, the confidence and an amazing voice to back it up. It’s one of the reason’s why he is one of Omawumi’s favourite. However, this weekend, David had his worst week yet, falling slightly below the judges’ expectations and into possible exclusion. His Saturday performance of ‘Mr Loverman’ by Shaba Ranks only got him a 7 out of 10 points. Then his performance of Calvin Harris and Sam Smith’sPromises’ on Sunday got him 16.3 out of 20 points, making it likely that he could be dropped from the show this week

5. Caesar: Caesar had a shaky start, but his growth through the weeks of training on the show is evident. While he isn’t the most consistent performer, his immense growth so far lands him a spot on this list. His first performance on the show of ‘Memories’ by Maroon 5 got him a ‘maybe’ from the judges. But, he quickly redeemed himself during the face-off round against Rael. His version of Davido’s ‘Fall’ was so good that the judges voted to keep him and Rael. His first two performances were average, but his last three have been good. He has unlocked his confidence and found his voice. This weekend, he landed the 2nd top score, falling behind Freeborn. Hopefully, he keeps up the energy till the finals.

International premium beer brand Tiger Lager recently organized a two-day event to appreciate and create awareness for men and their mental health for the month of November. It was pure excitement as notable individuals like Noble Igwe, Taymesan, Nnamdi Okeke, Samuel Otigba, and many more were in attendance.

The events which were held at the Live Lounge in Victoria Island, Lagos, and the Mancave in Lekki, Lagos, gave men an opportunity to talk about important things that affect them, all the while enjoying cold beer and playing exciting games and activities.

The events were put together as part of the brand’s movember campaign to raise awareness for men’s mental health. “Movember” is a global movement to raise awareness of men’s health issues, such as prostate cancer, testicular cancer, mental health, and men’s suicide using unconventional approaches such as a man’s moustache. The Tiger beer brand encouraged its consumers and target audience to Uncage their “Tashes” and emotions throughout the month.

With this unique campaign, the public was implored to join in on the conversation, as Tiger beer had giphy tashes, IG Live with a mental health professional, tiger care packages amongst others encouraging men to share their unique stories.

Speaking at the event, Brand Manager, International brands, Nigerian Breweries Plc, Chinwe Greg-Egu said, “Tiger beer inspires people to uncage and express themselves. For the last month, the Movember campaign started and maintains the conversations we seldom ever have in Nigeria. Conversations highlighting how men must be in tune with their emotions and mental health. With this campaign we wanted to create a safe space for them, and I’m glad we not only did that but we surpassed expectations.”

For men who attended the Mancave x Tiger events on Friday, November 27, and Saturday, November 28, the events posed an opportunity to uncage – either by having a clean haircut, playing snooker, or even having a pedicure right at the venue.

Tiger Beer, a product of Nigeria’s leading brewer, Nigerian Breweries Plc, is known for its penchant for self-expression. For two years now, Tiger Beer has constantly thrown its weight behind conversations surrounding its unique brand message of uncaging, and it seems no one is left as men uncaged their emotions, anxieties, and thoughts.

Buckwyld ‘N’ Breathless: A Decade Pushing The Envelope By EFE OMOROGBE

“The genius thing we did was we did not give up” – Jay Z.

Audacity. That’s probably the word that best captures the fuel that powered the push. The push that grew Nigerian music from the doldrums in the 90s to the dizzying highs it’s hitting in 2020 and I am super proud to have played a role in the redefinition of the Nigerian music industry.

Without a master plan, without government support, Nigerian music grew from a time when the main source of local music was small imprints funded as passion projects or trophy investments, to the return and entry of global players like Universal, Sony, Warner, Kupenda etc.

As I join many other industry players to celebrate the success of the music industry in general, my crew and I are taking time out to celebrate the milestone –  a decade since the debut of Buckwyld ‘n’ Breathless, the concert brand.

My first name is Efe, last name OMOROGBE – the emphasis deliberate. If I got a million naira each time my last name was misspelt over the years, I’d be hosting Dangote to brunch on the regular by now.

I’ve worked professionally in the entertainment industry for more than two decades wearing several caps – writer, journalist, producer (television, music, event, film), songwriter, copyright protection advocate/administrator, label exec, consultant, talent manager and more. I’m obviously better known for talent management, Now Muzik and 2face. Six out of ten times an acquaintance dials my number on his or her phone and the words “Efe 2face” pop. I can’t be mad. For a phenomenon who has spent much of the last quarter of a century dominating fellow foreground figures, brands and platforms, an understated guy in the background stands a great chance of having his identity subsumed by the super brand that is 2Baba, albeit inadvertently.

While I’m also extremely proud of our modest accomplishments at Now Muzik and Hypertek Digital, it’s the trials and triumphs of creating, birthing and sustaining the Buckwyld ‘n’ Breathless brand that fills me with joy at the moment. Why? Because it is a decade of one of the most challenging projects I’ve taken on in my career so far. Period.

First of all, let me unapologetically reiterate the cliche, “There’s no such thing as a small show”. Every experienced event promoter, producer or planner will tell you this for free. There’s no such thing as an easy production. No production is without its unique challenges and no matter how many times you’ve delivered it, a routine production can still go horribly wrong. Like my mentor, Edi Lawani would caution back then, “Prepare with the assumption that everything that can go wrong will go wrong”.

If this is true for a regular concert in Nigeria where it is commonplace to hit the mark by lining up a few trending artistes, rigging good quality sound/screen/lighting and running through the acts backed by a deejay and punctuated by spurts of comedy, one can then only imagine how high the stakes can get when the production hinges on an edgy script, three headliners, half-a-dozen support acts, 16 -piece band, 30+ dancers/extras, month-long rehearsals, multiple costume changes, intricate multimedia /props /SFX sequences and perhaps the most daunting – an average of N70m budget per show! With Buckwyld ‘n’ Breathless, more than any other production, there are at least, 20 things angling towards going wrong at the same time. Like the tag BnB, it’s always crazy.

The way the industry has grown over the last 25 years has, like everything else, created the great, the good, the bad and the pretty ugly. For the most part, it has been organic, driven by passion and gusto, championed by independent players without the benefit of government support, formal structures and pre-organized processes. So, while it has earned its vibrancy and resilience from this freestyle mode, it has also created challenges with effective monetization and a culture of shortcuts among practitioners. This has, in turn, created an industry that sort of normalized less-than-professional conduct particularly in the area of live performances. The result was an approach to delivering live concerts that saw talents relying too heavily on a collection of hit records and therefore expending minimal effort on stagecraft, often leaving discerning fans feeling shortchanged.

The seed for a “proper production” was sown in 2006 when Buckwyld Media (then known as Now Muzik Events and Promotions) was engaged by 2face Idibia as production consultants to deliver 2face Live: Chapter 2, the “Grass 2 Grace” album launch concert at Planet 1, Maryland, Lagos.  We had for two years prior, fantasised, planned and plotted that “proper production” as artiste and management, and the release of his now classic sophomore solo album presented an opportunity to walk the talk. And we did exactly that to the delight of a packed house many of whom gushed for months on end about how Chapter 2 was their favourite concert experience in Nigeria at the time.

We were happy and inspired but not satisfied. We knew what nobody else knew – how much better it could have been with a bigger venue with more stage, backstage and headroom space, bigger budget, bigger cast, more prep time, fewer disappointments and so on. Four years down the road, all the pieces of our “proper production” puzzle fell into place.

September 26, 2010, was D-day. 2face Idibia was a bonafide international superstar and the biggest draw in the land. His catalogue of hits had grown tremendously to include crowd-pleasers like “Free”, “Enter the Place”, “Flex”, “Implication”, “Only Me” and collabo cuts like “Yori Yori” with Bracket, “Stylee” with Cool DJ Jimmy Jatt, and the almighty “Street Credibility” with 9ice. Eko Hotel had completed the ambitious Eko Convention Centre and Cecil Hammond, who had incidentally witnessed Chapter 2, was in the mood to take his already successful Flytime promotion gig to the next level. Buckwyld Media was primed to deliver the concert experience that would change the game for good. 2face Live: Buckwyld ‘n’ Breathless happened and it’s been a tougher job trying to convince me that impossible is something since then.

Rave reviews, multiple editions  – Lagos (Away & Beyond), London (Away & Beyond), Lagos (The Disruption), Nairobi (Disruption Africa), Lagos (The Lagos Dream), Lagos (Power of 1) – and magic moments by headliners MI, Sauti Sol, Tiwa Savage, Flavour, Phyno, Falz and of course, 2Baba later. Buckwyld ‘n’ Breathless occupies a unique space as the concert experience that offers discerning live music fans more value for their time and money.

None of this would be possible without the invaluable contribution of the dream team (past and present) and partners behind the BnB project – Innocent Idibia, Helen Abutu, Osarhiemen Omorogbe, Tony Anifite, Edi Lawani, Kingsley James, Andre Blaze, Ayeni Adekunle Samuel, Ayo Animashaun, Danny Kioupouroglou, Cecil Hammond, Ohimai Atafo, Mike Igbelabo, Bayo Omisore, Hoffmann Akubeze and all our wonderful vendors, consultants, and sponsors. Of course, special mention must be made of all the amazing star talents and the supporting cast of dancers, musicians and extras whose brilliant performances have created the magical moments Buckwyld ‘n’ Breathless is known and loved for. From the depth of my heart, I say thank you and God bless.

To fully appreciate how much we have grown the live music space within the annals of the mainstream pop scene in Nigeria over the last quarter of a century, a bit of context may be helpful.

Circa 1996, the live circuit opportunities within the pop space were, with the exception of the likes of Lagbaja, few and far between. While the party scene was popping – the high life/juju acts and performers often made more from praise-singing and spraying than their negotiated performance fees – the pop scene was a wilderness of sorts with trending stars justling for low-paying slots on the few brand-sponsored platforms available. Long before we had a global megastar like Breezy popping onstage with Davido on his international tour, trending pop acts considered it a big deal then to open for foreign acts like Yvonne Chaka Chaka, Awilo Logonba and Caron Wheeler (Soul 2 Soul) in Lagos, Nigeria.

Fast forward to the present day. Promoters block book the Eko Convention Centre and other top concert venues for mainstream pop stars to dirty our pre-covid 19 Decembers and rake in hundreds of millions in revenue. At home and abroad, some of the most iconic venues are witnessing the commercial prowess of homegrown Nigerian talents. And as the growth continues, we stand proud of our contribution thus far and remain poised to work towards raising the bar, higher and higher. As we say at Buckwyld Media, push the envelope!

– Efe Omorogbe.

Plaqad is First-Ever End-to-End Automated Marketing Platform and a protest against the norm

BlackHouse Media (BHM), one of the most successful PR companies to come out of Africa, is launching Plaqad, a global automated communications platform that looks to help brands, agencies and individuals run end-to-end social and web campaigns. Plaqad is the first solution in the world to offer a one-stop-shop for all things needed to implement a successful marketing campaign.

Earlier in June, the company, Plaqad, launched its initial offering, SocialCred, a free influencer and social media ranking tool that leverages non-traditional metrics to measure influence on Twitter, LinkedIn and Facebook. SocialCred provides social media users with actionable insights to grow their influence, while providing brands with sufficient data on influencers to make informed decisions on which creator to partner with. The tool, by downplaying traditional metrics like reach and impressions, also helps to counter influencer fraud and measure real engagement.

“Plaqad, a contorted way of spelling the word ‘placard,’ is a protest against the norm; the traditional forms of communication that disenfranchise brands and individuals from effectively making their voices heard because of budget, location or size,” said BlackHouse Media and Plaqad Founder, Ayeni Adekunle. “As the first marketing software company from Africa launching on a global stage, we understand and recognize the importance of being heard, hence our mantra, ‘Make your voice heard’.”

Ayeni founded BlackHouse Media over 14 years ago, building up a roster of top-tier clients such as Coca-Cola, Heineken, MultiChoice, ViacomCBS, MTN and Reckitt Benckiser, and a workforce of nearly 100. “We conceived the idea for Plaqad to help democratize an important aspect of modern communications,” said Adekunle.

End-to-End Communications Platform

Plaqad integrates the features of an online freelance marketplace and a robust social media tracking analytics platform to help brands seamlessly connect with their target audience. It provides them with the people, platforms and tools they need to succeed, eliminating the need for expensive third-party tools.

“Our platform gives every individual and brand a voice in the marketplace by opening up access to quality talent and tools and automating the entire process of executing PR and marketing campaigns,” said Plaqad CEO Gbenga Sogbaike. “Plaqad levels the playing field, giving SMBs the ability to connect to quality service providers regardless of budget, while also tracking their campaigns realtime right in one place.”

Plaqad provides a seamless talent solution and analytics platform for individuals and brands who want to run data-driven and cost-effective social and web campaigns in record time.

Ranking Influence

SocialCred is Plaqad’s response to the mushrooming issue of influencer fraud and fake news. Its algorithm measures real influence and minimizes influencer fraud by downplaying traditional metrics like follower count, reach and impressions, focusing instead on engagement rate, audience sentiments (positive, neutral or negative), content quality and the creators’ ratio of original to shared posts within a 30-day window.

While designed as a tool for influencers and the brands that want to engage with them, the free app is available to all social media users. Individuals are awarded badges – titled A-Lister, Big Shot, Socialite, Trend Setter, JJC, Superstar, and Learner – based on their rankings.

Beyond the fun factor, SocialCred’s badges serve an important function, helping brands assess and select influencers based on their influence quotient across Instagram, Twitter and YouTube. The platform makes it easier for brands to find genuine influencers who can drive real actions.

It also helps influencers to get better – and acquire bigger and better badges – by offering tips and tools to boost their visibility and social credibility.

“We have a fake news problem across Africa and the world, and Plaqad is here to distinguish the real from the fake,” says Plaqad CEO Gbenga Sogbaike. “SocialCred, our first tool, does just that, promoting transparency in influencer marketing and helping to counter influencer fraud. SocialCred separates real influencers from those simply faking it.”

The Plaqad marketplace and analytics platform will be in full release beginning November 30. From November 30 through December 15, Plaqad is offering brands, agencies and individuals the opportunity to test drive the game-changing platform at no cost. For more information, visit plaqad.com.

December in Nigeria is always a big deal! Nigerians get excited about so many things. For some people, it’s the holiday spirit, the break from work or even the trips to their hometowns. But what excites people the most are the music concerts and events that take place all over the country.

2020 and Coronavirus may have cramped a lot of our ‘Detty December’ plans but Livespot X, the entertainment division of Livespot360, has found a way to turn things around. They are set to hold a two-day intimate and exclusive concert, headlined by one of the biggest names in Nigeria – Wizkid.

Instead of the ridiculously crowded concerts that Machalla is known for, thanks to the Livespot X team, he’ll be more connected with his fans this year. The two-day event will be very exclusive and intimate while featuring all the fun parts of the ‘Detty December’ concerts Lagos is well known for.

Wizkid will headline the concert on Sunday, December 20, 2020. A host of other award-winning Nigerian artistes like Darey, Simi, Yemi Alade, Cuppy, Patoranking, Omahlay, Reekado banks, Rema, Mayorkun, will also perform on both days of the event.

Due to Covid-19 restrictions, Livespot X-clusive will be a hybrid event with a few tickets (table tickets) for physical attendance. But fear not, the organisers will also stream the concert live for those who can’t make the physical event.

Wizkid recently released his wildly successful album, ‘Made in Lagos’. He also scored his second Grammy nomination as a collaborator on Beyonce’s ‘Brown Skin Girl’ a few weeks ago.

His music and relatively aspirational lifestyle have made him a bonafide celebrity, and his fans are sure to be wilding when they get to be so up-close and personal with their fave. Wizkid will certainly thrill his fans with killer live performances of back to back hits.

Livespot X-clusive promises to be an experience like no other. The two-day event will have gates open by 6 pm and sources say it’s set to be the best show in Africa this year.

Last year, Livespot staged the concert of the year when they brought Cardi-B to Nigeria, and they’re set to go all out once again for this year’s exclusive event which will feature an exciting mix of incredible live performances; music, quality sound, illusionists, top DJs, and an immense all-round experience that promises to live up to the expectations accustomed to Livespot360.

So, if you are searching for events to attend this December, look no further, because all roads lead to the Livespot X-clusive!
